I felt the same way the first couple of times we had to put dog or cat down, but came to realize that as they trusted me with their life, they trusted me to make a rational decision about when it was time for them to leave it.
(Poorly worded - I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.)
I do, thanks.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
It still feels horrible even when you know it was the right decision.
Yep. I have plenty of logic for why it had to be done, but the heart ain't listening.
I think part of it is - when he was younger, and active, we had so much fun. All the cute affectionate things dogs do. Even when he was stealing food (pretty often) it was always funny. Easy to remember how much you love a dog when that stuff's happening.
And then the last year or so, it was all about the non-fun stuff: giving him pills, carrying him from bed to food and back, getting up in the middle of the night to stop him bumping into stuff, cleaning up messes. I lost track of the fact that all those things are expressions of love too, until Saturday when I wasn't doing them any more.
