This question relates to systemic birth control, such as the pill, depo-provera, norplant, nuva-ring, and the like. I know that condoms are effective and necessary, but I'm looking to augment my anti-pregnancy arsenal with a little something extra. Tell me what works for you.

What's your preferred method of birth control?

How long have you been on it?

How does it make you feel?

Has it caused you to gain weight?

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your sex-drive?

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your physical sensitivity?

Does it make your periods less or more severe?

Does it have an effect on your moods?

Is it effective? (has it protected you from becoming pregnant?)

Would you recommend it to others?

Tricyclin, 21 days

Been on it since I was 18.

No significant weight gain.

Never really caused any side effects that I know of outside of a headache when I go off it for the 7 days.

Mr K and I use a judicious combination of caondoms and the calendar. We used to be a little bit more careful, but now that we are looking for a bigger flat anyway, we're a bit more c'est la vie about the whole thing.

How long have you been on it?

As long as we've been together, except for a brief period when I went on the pill to try it out. Didn't like that.

How does it make you feel?

Fine and dandy, thanks.

Has it caused you to gain weight?

Well, this is one of the reasons I went off the pill.

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your sex-drive?

Nope.

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your physical sensitivity?

Nope.

Does it make your periods less or more severe?

I am regular as clockwork and 2 out of 3 periods I have minimal cramping, 1 out of 3 is a bit more intense but not horrible.

Does it have an effect on your moods?

Another reason I did not like the pill.

Is it effective? (has it protected you from becoming pregnant?)

Yep.

Would you recommend it to others?

Well, I would say only to others who are prepared to deal with an unexpected pregnancy, should your calendar counting go awry. If your periods are not regular, forget about it.

"You have big beautiful blue eyes"

And when you do, if ever decide to get pregnant....your child will too.

Just make sure your guy doesnt ride the tricycle first.....you never know. Hell I even know a girl that wont wash her panties in the same load with her dudes underwear as a precaution.

Don't forget hearing the horror stories from those of us with newborns. That'll inspire you to be really careful.

What's your preferred method of birth control? Snip Snip (Tubal)

How long have you been on it? Got it done almost a year ago

How does it make you feel? Past the post pregnancy sobbing fits of "I'm never going to be pregnant again", fine.

Has it caused you to gain weight? Nope

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your sex-drive? Nope

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your physical sensitivity? Nope

Does it make your periods less or more severe? Less often, more severe

Does it have an effect on your moods? Nope

Is it effective? (has it protected you from becoming pregnant?) Uh... so far, yes. There ARE documented cases where it CAN happen, though

Would you recommend it to others? Not unless oyu are 100% sure you no longer wish to have children.

What's your preferred method of birth control?
I say knock them up and you get 9 months worry free sex.

How long have you been on it?
About 9 months

How does it make you feel?
Virile

Has it caused you to gain weight?
Um, not me, but I suspect it would be different for you.

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your sex-drive?
Nope

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your physical sensitivity?
Nope

Does it make your periods less or more severe?
Oh, for women, much less!

Does it have an effect on your moods?
My mood swings have changed. Beyond that, I'm pleading the 5th.

Is it effective? (has it protected you from becoming pregnant?)
I don't believe anyone has ever become pregnant during this period.

Would you recommend it to others?
Clearly it's not for everyone. In fact I am looking to change methods too.

Ahhh well I also keep additonal methods close by...and if that's not an option, well.....the outside of my belly is as good as the inside!

Hey baaaaabeee!

What's your preferred method of birth control?
IUD stand for "intrauterine device"

How long have you been on it?
10 years

How does it make you feel?
feel good

Has it caused you to gain weight?
No

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your sex-drive?
No and its why I used that, libido was inexistent with pills.

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your physical sensitivity?
Nope

Does it make your periods less or more severe?
More and longer too, its the bad effect of IUD

Does it have an effect on your moods?
Nope

Is it effective? (has it protected you from becoming pregnant?)
Oh yes, I have no problems becoming pregnant and with IUD I didnt.

Would you recommend it to others?
It work better if you have been pregnant before. I recommend too, to be in the safer side, to make it check the next month you had it on, because it can slip and not be effective.

What's your preferred method of birth control? Currently, condoms or abstinence. If I got into a steady relationship, I would get a vasectomy.

How long have you been on it? Too long.

How does it make you feel?About the same.

Has it caused you to gain weight? No.

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your sex-drive? No.

Does it have an effect (negative or positive) on your physical sensitivity? Only when I use a condom.

Does it make your periods less or more severe? Nope - they are about the same. :D

Does it have an effect on your moods? Abstinence makes me horny.

Is it effective? (has it protected you from becoming pregnant?) Yep.

Would you recommend it to others? Hey, it works, but no I wouldn't recommend abstinence - lots and lots of sex is preferable. Condoms don't feel as good as bareback sex - so a vasectomy is preferable, I just don't get enough sex to justify it.

I was on Minestrin for about 4 months since July and it was horrible.....I was an emotional wreck (extreme mood swings; would cry if anyone so much as looked at me the wrong way), had breakthrough bleeding every cycle (that would last for two weeks), and all around just didn't feel like myself.

I've since switched to Tricyclen, and I've had absolutely no problems so far (in my third month right now). I've looked into other methods of birth control, but for right now this particular pill works great for me.

To answer all the questions:

I've had few mood swings.

My periods have been lighter (though not by much).

I haven't gained weight.

It has had a positive effect on my sex drive (unlike minestrin, which had the opposite effect...though I'm sure all the other problems it caused at the time didn't help).

There has been no noticeable effect on my sensitivity.

It has been effective for me.

Yes, I would recommend it to others (it was in fact recommended to me by a friend who'd had similar experiences on another pill and successfully switched to Tricyclen).
