So what exactly is this world that I have stumbled upon? Who owns Literotica and who decides who becomes a moderator? Why are folks so intense here?

Facts from somone who might be classified inventory

I have been hanging out here for a while I would think, so allow me to take you on a tour around this little corner of cyber world....

Literotica is a non-profit (gee, would you have thought that, never having been asked for any fees?) site run by simply two (extra-) ordinary people, Laurel and Manu, who have a regular day time job and sacrifice their other time for us and Lit (with some support in the meantime I assume, seeing the size of it). They pay for the server, scripts and bandwidth and do so a) by using their own money and b) allowing sponsor banners and having a little online shop at Lit.

The page - as Literotica indicates - is mainly evolving around the erotic stories of whoever feels like writing and submitting one. And in the meantime the level and quality of stories and authors assembled here is the best I know of in cyber-land. As well it holds a vast selection of story categories.

Mainly the message boards were established to offer an exchange/feedback forum for authors and readers, but with the growing community and the growing number of topics there was the need to add board after board after board .... and this is how the Mesage Boards - the Forum - as you know it now, came into being.

How are moderators nominated?

Let me tell you about the story of the SRP forum - just to take a random example... at some stage people wanted to write their little "interactive adventures", the online "fantasies and flirting" was getting much and too much to be handled on the GB, and the sexual innuendo wasn't really wanted on the regular Role Playing board - so the SRP (Sexual Role Playing) Board was established.

Things started out slow there - a handfull of posters who knew each other well, and who would work out elaborate stories and plot lines as well as endless and chaotic silly ones .. but they all knew each other and dealt with each other accordingly. No moderators were "in function" then. But with growing interest and a growing general Lit community newcomers would start to play. And they would at times either take on a tone that was not suitable for the Lit surrounding, or simply didn't know their way around. Eventually moderators were established to have a "focus point" for people to address. Not so much to be managing the boards, but to be there if people needed support, if they had questions or issues to address. They could simply click on the moderator links and drop the mods a PM or mail.

Eventually, with the increase of numbers, there was an increase of iolating-the-rules posts - playing underage characters (a definite NONO in the site policy itsef), disturbing threads with asshole attitudes or simply messing things up for the sake of causing havoc and hunting down indivitual authors. That type of bahaviour is fairly easily identified on a Role Play board - all stuff that is clearly not contributing to the ongoing plot or is simply harassing or violating rules has to be addressed, and if no other solution can be found, has to go.

Then as a moderator you get a flood of "Can't you delete this?" and "Why did you delete this?" messages.

How do I know? I was the moderator in those days.
How was I nominated? I was there from the start, knew the way around and seemed to be a reasonably articulate, diplomatic and self controlled person who everyone present at that stage would accept.

Why are folks so intense here?
Do you mean "Here" at Lit? or "here" at this BDSM corner in particular?

Some are "intense" because we hate to see things change from what we love to something mainstream and abused.
Some are intense becasue there is a feeling of being treated badly by others
Some are intense because we have a bad day ... and some are intense just becasue of constant, barely hidden provocation. And maybe some of us are intense becasue they have gone through certain topics for gazillions of times since coming here, and are loosing patience with those who think they can just come here and change an "age-old" community to their liking in a day or two. (two plus years is AGES for a cyber community!)

There have been "tense" times on Lit before, even the owners (just imagine that!) have been challenged for being partial, unfair, exclusive and whatever ... excuse me, but they bloody offer their time and money for this to exist, they can bloody do with it whatever they want. If they decide to make it a private party where all are only allowed when wearing green hats and red noses so be it! They and the Mods owe us NOTHING!

The guys and girls being Moderators here (ona all boards in the forum and the chat) have been constantly accused of doing not enough, doing too much, not doing the right thing, doing the right thing but not really, and it is time consuming and not always fun. What happens is that all of a sudden you have to leave your identity at the door - but hell, we have been growing with this place from when it was a baby. Not everyone can just step back and detach from that affection, passion and admiration for the incredible feat Laurel and Many have managed to accomplish!

Does anyone ever realize that this is considered really "hard work"? to run and maintain such a web page, such a volume of traffic, such an amount of people from all backgrounds, environments, cultures?

The world of Lit in a nutshell: This is a private site of Laurel and Manu, who generously invest their time and money for nothing in return to offer us a home on the internet to meet and exchange words - thoughts - ourselves.

edited just because it is late and I am thinking in slices

Asking with MUCH respect,...I couldn't find the answer to your stated question, did you edit it out?

BTW,...aside from that,...in my opinion,...your post was invaluable. Thanks for the information.
I know it took a LOT of your time to address the issues, and you didn't get a paycheck for posting it. :rose:

P.S.~(I don't think anyone is gonna buy that, Literotica is NOT fincially profitable for the owners) JMHO :)

let me think another "slice" out loud then:

I was hanging out thre a lot anyway - Laurel asked me "would you?" and I said "ok" ... nobody opposed ... done.

As I understand it, Laurel and Manu own this site. They could shut it down tomorrow, or do the green nose thing, like you suggested. Or anything else they please. I'm happy that they set up this site. I like it, and I've spent a lot of time here.

I'm not here on the sufference of any moderator, though.

The mods here are members like anyone else. They can have bad days, good days, and in-between days. They can be moderate or inflammatory.

But they don't have any special authority here; not any more than what they've earned.

I say that not only because it's true - "oil" for one demonstrated free speech rules - but because I think it'd reduce the tension here if folks would get over thinking mods are different than the rest of us.

the little picture

To anyone who wants to respond:
When I reach 100 posts, I get the little picture by my name, is that correct?

Yes Ma'am,...it's called an avatar,...and Wizard or somebody has posted links where you can choose from ready made selections,...or,...you can scan and post one of your OWN pics that MIGHT be on your puter.

Others can be more helpful in that endeavor.:rose:

It isn't a matter of EARNED,...it's a matter of being chosen, and yes,...they DO have special Authority. :D

I will refrain from arguing the point,...cause I just don't wanna! ;)

Well, if you don wanna, that's ok with me.

But if I were a moderator, I'd make you. ;)

Great Info from Hecate!

good question Rose..

btw..Hectate?/ did you ever know that you're my hero? love that avy AND all your wonderful wisdom also..thank God for Laurel and Manu!! for Hectate>:rose:

your user ID is the last number in the "head line" (so to speak the URL) when you open your profile ... I KNOW this doesn't make much sense so ...

so eg. if you open (or depending on your set up even mouse over)my profile and check the "URL" you will see

http://forum.literotica.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=573

I was No. 573 to register, so eg. Desert Rose is No. 142847, artful's dream is No. 116418

Hope that made sense now?

Thank you so much Hectate

you are wise and awesome beyond your years:rose:
