What is the commonly used trope that irks you the most?

Thinking about the black guys in my stories:

  1. A ship’s officer, senior to the FMC
  2. An ex-marine working in security and head over heels with a supporting FC
  3. An older owner of a chocolatier - that was a bit tropey, it made sense in the story and I asked a couple of black friends here if they thought it OK

I wrote a black woman character (one based very loosely on my GF, btw) into three different stories.

In all three tales her skin color was only mentioned as a feature of her attractiveness, but that's pretty much it.

Any lesbian I've known would be disgusted by the thought.
I don’t think that’s entirely true. And I don’t just mean bi girls like me. Some women I know have found their sexuality after years of trying to be “normal” (quotes intentional). Some are now exclusively lesbian, but that doesn’t mean they are necessarily disgusted by their pasts. Or that they don’t have some residual feelings for men on occcasion.

As ever generalizations fall flat. I was pretty much a girl girl (IRL at least) before I hooked up with my bf. But I’ve learned that it’s as much the person as their genitalia that matters. Then I accept this could just be me.

I welcome feedback on my recurring characters of every race and what readers think of them. I personally consider them all developing characters in various ways.

The recurring black characters- Yes, Clarke is a black bisexual military officer who loves hyping his sexual performance- and for the record, he's not entirely bragging, but not everyone is interested in him either. Yes, Shauna and Tara Shapiro are Southern black preacher's daughters with remarkable curiosity levels and kinkiness. Yes, Del Dawson is a toned down gay Mr. T in appearance and has Chris Rock's levels of idiocy sometimes. Is any of this a bad thing?

Lesbians liking men- I think a lot of men have the fantasy of being Holden from Chasing Amy. They want to be lesbians' friends, tempt the woman enough to turn her bisexual even if it's brief. It worked out for Holden, short term. I will admit to having had the fantasy myself. EmilyMiller is right, though- who the person is matters as much as what they have between their legs. Often it matters more.

I actually agree with this. I hate the BBC trope.

I hate the BBC trope because over all it's just asinine.
I hate the BBC trope because it's nothing but a mockery and a caricature.
I hate the BBC trope because the characters are nothing but cardboard.
I hate the BBC trope because it's thoroughly eyerolling and predictable.
I hate the BBC trope because it lacks all subtlety realism and is nothing more than shitty porn.

Most of all I hate the BBC trope because it stomps all over and destroys the wonderful sexy exoticism of mixed races. Interracial is HAWT. Mixing the colors is HAWT. Even I admit that even the simple contrast between skin colors is hot, whether it's olive Arab and brown Indian, or straight up dark black African and pale ginger. Black, white, Asian, Latin ... bring it all on.

But no, we need to have a 300 lb 6,7" rippling Mandingo shoving his bus-sized penis into a white cunt that is already cumming on sight of his impossible junk and he's going to thrash her mercilessly for hours on end and cum multiple times without going soft between and she's going to love every nano-second of it since none of her previous white lovers could ever come close to the superhuman porn machine that's drilling her out (and she will emphatically declare so), and the whole thing will be laced with the tackiest porn dialogue.
In my opinion:
People of mixed ethnicities is exactly the same as two people of the same ethnicity.
It is no hotter or erotic than any other two people having sex.
The only thing that is different is from a purely aesthetic of skin tones. Hair styles, people from all over the world have experimented with that.
The interesting aspect of mixed ethnicity relationships is in how they deal with the expectations of friends and families. Different religions, understandings. These all bring interesting elements, but sex... It is the same regardless of their ethnicity.

But not while they're hibernating, I hope. That would be ungentlemanly.

No, only hungry, early-spring, just-out-of-the-cave bears, the kind looking ravenously for fish and berries, and that would have no qualms of eating you if you tried to distract them with nasty, tropy smut stories.

I agree with that.

Am I a bad person for finding the image of white cum on black skin erotic?

I’ve never had sex with a black guy - in fact I’ve only had sex with white guys. The girls were a little more diverse, including one black woman. Some time ago, though.

She’s the archetype for Jamila in my forthcoming story. An old American Korean friend is the archetype for Ha-yoon.

This is probably a very specific gripe to me alone, but I dislike when dialogue uses “gawd” which is a fair amount of stories I’ve read on Lit 😄

Probably a generational thing

I'm going to assume fish and berries is a euphemism for assorted genitalia.

Lesbians who secretly yearn for men.

I made fun of this trope in my story, Pornville.

Todd is an amateur erotica author trapped in the world of his own stories, along with his wife, Sharon.

Sharon isn't too happy because Todd wrote her into a lesbian threesome story called The Dykes Of Dalton Street.

The snippet below is them arguing about what comes next:

After what felt like an eternal silence, she spoke. "So, what's the next one?"

Todd shifted uncomfortably. "A sequel to 'The Dykes Of Dalton Street.'"

"That's offensive, you know."

"What's offensive?"

"'Dykes. It's derogatory."

"None of my readers complained."

"None of your MALE readers."

Todd had no reply for that.

"So what happens in the sequel?"

"Shane brings home her boyfriend, Tim. They have a four-way."

"Oh, for fuck's sake. You realize if they're fucking a guy, they're not truly lesbians, right?"

"Jesus, Sharon, you really wanna nitpick my writing right now?"

"Yeah, I kinda do. Because it just sounds like an excuse for you to live out your little racist fantasy of fucking a black girl, an Asian girl, and a Latina all in one night."

"Racist??? How is that racist? I thought I was being inclusive!"

"Giana speaks broken English. And Ari actually said, 'Ah, me so horny, me love you long time,' before she went down on me! I'm assuming you wrote that."

"It was just a joke, a line from a movie!"

"Still racist."

"That's harsh, Sharon."

We're all Africans.

About 6/7ths of us are ex-pat Africans. But still Africans.

Great sex for me relies on nothing more than the two people together generate a chemical reaction that ignites a flame of eroticism.
How they interact together.
Whether they are able to excite their partner...
It is their emotional connection I love to explore.
Their ethnicity doesn't enter into their enjoyment.
In my opinion. LOL

I don't think so.
You are however entitled to your opinion.
I think our ethnicities go back a lot further than Africa's existence.
In my opinion.
I am not an expert.

Africa, as a geographical place (I don't mean as a collection of political entities), has existed for tens of millions of years.

Home sapiens, our species, originated in Eastern Africa sometime around 300,000 years ago, and our species dispersed in a series of waves from Africa throughout the world some time after that. So that's what I'm referring to. We're all descended from a common ancestor. We're all related. We're all family. Our original, commonly shared great-grandparent was born somewhere in Eastern Africa.

Humans tend to think of "races" as being very different, probably because our modern cultures developed during a period when travel was limited and different groups of people were relatively isolated from one another for thousands of years, but if an alien species came to Earth and studied us they'd probably say something like, "These humans are all so boringly the same."

This is why I love the Lord of the Rings so much.

Samwise + Frodo yeet Gollum and the One Ring into Orodruin. Yay! Sauron gets shagged to pieces!

...I know Tolkien made some revisions from one edition to another but I'm not familiar with that one.

Yay! Aragorn marries Arwen! Yay! Faramir marries Eowyn! Yay!

The power of the Rings is broken and the Elves have to leave Middle Earth? And they did everything to help Frodo achieve his quest, knowing that this would be the outcome for them? Boo!

And even after the Nazgul's destruction, Frodo's carrying scars that never completely heal.
