What is Putin's objective....it's not primarily sizing Ukraine

Georgia and Moldova both just applied for EU admission.
If I were Moldovan, I would be campaigning for unification with Rumania. It makes sense -- same language and culture -- and brings Moldova under NATO's umbrella.

Speaking of:
If I were Romanian or Moldavian, I'd be shaking in my boots.

Gosh the Russian occupied buffer zone around Moldova (non-Eu member)..
And the NATO bases in Romania

No wonder there are fewer refugees to Romania/Moldova, and so many in Poland.
Initially I thought rich country-poor countries,
but it's about escape routes to safer countries in case the war extends.

What are your thoughts?

retired Lt. Col. Vindman calls mtg out over her tweets that russia only invaded Ukraine because President Biden was 'weak'

after she continued to fling insults his way, saying he shouldn't be dragging Americans into danger and should go fight himself, he responded:
“This is what service looks like,” he tweeted. “I served my country — the United States of America who welcomed my refugee family — for 21 years, 6 months, 10 days in uniform & I continue to serve out of uniform. You only serve as Putin’s useful idiot.”
boom!

l have wondered re some perhaps irrelevant things:
  • Is Putin acting alone; i.e., does he have a 'cabinet', a group of advisers, etc. Stalin, from what I have read, pretty much acted alone.
  • Is there a 'chain of command' in Russia?
  • Putin is mortal; is there a succession plan for governing Russia?
  • Could it be that Putin is being manipulated by his military? I wonder what the process would be for Putin to invoke nuclear weapons. Hopefully there is not a big red button on his desk....
Just things I hope that the Western nations have a handle on....
Russia has a parliament known as the Duma.

Red Cross says evacuation route offered to Mariupol evacuees was mined
Asked what's gone wrong with so-called humanitarian corridors, he said they had been talking to both sides "for days", but problems remained confirming the detail of any ceasefire agreement - to allow civilians out of bombarded cities.

Stillhart said the challenge was to get the two parties to an agreement that is "concrete, actionable and precise".

He added that so far there had only been agreements "in principle", which had immediately broken down because they lacked precision, regarding routes and who can use them.

Illustrating his point, he said some ICRC staff had tried to get out of Mariupol along an agreed route on Sunday, but soon realised "the road indicated to them was actually mined".

Vindman represents the best of the American way. He is awesome.

Margarine Green is trailer trash. Shit on the sidewalk and an unfortunate Representation of how far the GOP has sunk, especially, in her State.

Putin's objective is the same as it always has been. Create division in the US...create division in NATO...create division in EU. Why do you think Trump idolizes him? They have the exact same goals

I think Putin is scrambling for new objectives among a lot of bad options.

And by invading Ukraine he has failed in all those objectives.

Rumor yesterday was that Putin just now being told that the units sent into Ukraine were mostly Russian conscripts from the East!:ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO:

What, from Siberia?

Are they necessarily conscripts? If I lived in Siberia, I'd see the army as an escape route from interminable boredom.

Sounds like an excuse for shitty training and command of regular forces. Putin has 70% of his regular army in Ukraine, they couldn't all be "conscripts." We sent hundreds of thousands of draftees into combat in WWII, as did all countries involved. There may be a large number of unseasoned Russian troops in the field in Ukraine but that doesn't explain their lack of training and leadership. The Russians haven't spent 20 years at war. I think it's a lack training, equipment, and leadership. Note that Putin has fired 8 generals in the last couple of weeks and has had several of his top commanders killed in the field. We're quickly finding out that Russia is a paper tiger with nuclear weapons of limited value.

As he sits all alone by himself afraid to interface with people for fear of contracting COVID. I think someone should share 290 Grains of lead poison just above the bridge of his nose equidistant between both orbits. What a fucking coward.

They lack a viable NCO corp, the don’t trust the enlisted ranks.

lol it's a fallacy to think about WWII. Think about Vietnam . . . USA fielded mostly conscript troops and was humiliated by irregular Vietnamese. USA had all the fanciest equipment, but draftees ain't gonna win against people defending their homes.

Apparently the Russian paratroops have also under-performed. This is their new recruiting video.

Unlike Western armies, they don't have a professional NCO role. Their soldiers are three-year conscripts and those in their third year consider themselves the elite and above basic duties. NCOs' roles have to be performed by their officers which degrades the officer's capabaility.

During WW2, Russian soldiers served for the duration and became very skilled - if they survived. The Russian troops who fought in Germany were very battle-hardened and were more than a match for the best the Germans had left.

Plus, POWs who probably fear for their lives are saying they weren't told they were being sent to Ukraine to engage in close combat. many are starving to death, shitty MREs that expired in 2015 and Third World logistics. Those 290 grains scare him more than Covid, I think.:)

The US had not fought an asymmetric war before Vietnam. The British had - in the Malayan emergency and were accused of war crimes for using their opponents' tactics.

The Ukrainian civilians are doing well because they have a culture that embraces personal ownership of guns.
