It does seem as though there are no middle ground people, but it only seems that way. Most people have an ambivalent attitude towards this whole subject. Most people are not directly effected. Most importantly, most people do not spout their opinions in public. This leaves you with a self selected group of individuals who care most passionately about this or any other subject.

"Slowly over time."

..is never going to be a winning strategy. Combine all of this with an election system based on party primaries that reward extreme positions, we will only become more and more imbalanced politically until the whole thing shakes itself apart. There are more contributing factors such as right wing talk radio, Internet echo chambers and corporate media that feeds on conflict, still most people are by definition moderate, they only fail to exercise their voice.
