Reading and participating in the politcal threads over the past few days I trend to assume that the USA is cutting its ties to the world.

Apart from a couple of things which I know about if I'm honest with myself, and I usually am, I'm not sure exactly what major treaties, agreements, accords or whatever America does participate in.

I'm not talking small bi-lateral agreements here but more the major international kind.

Here's a little list (and it is little!) to try and clear my mind...

IN:

United Nations
World Bank
IMF
NATO (for the moment - NATO will probably cease to exist over the next few years)
G8
OECD

OUT:

Kyoto

GOING IT ALONE:

Missile Defence System

I know more of the things America is involved in than it's not.

That got to mean something somehow.

dont forget nafta

The north american free trade agreement is still a fairly prominent topic of contention right now. As with everything else under the dubya Bush administration, it will benefit our large businesses and corporations the most and won't be particularly environmentally friendly. However, other long term effects it may have such as relationships and industrial development of our immediate neighbors have yet to be determined.

The world has decided, in a jealous fit, that the US is the Golden goose and now wants to run the feeding and laying schedule. FUCK THE UN!

last i checked the states are also involved in

the world ban on whale hunting
a little thing called the OAS
the largest contributor to the International Red Cross
the list does go on.....

Let's just say that the US is a semi detached member of NATO.
It's just come to light that while supposedly helping to inplement peace in the recent Balkan conflict. It was actually flying arms into one of the sides.
Several European observers , in the area, reported hearing Hercules aircraft flying low level at night, yet nothing was picked up by the US AWACs that were supposedly patrolling the skies. policing the no fly zone.
Then it was discovered that US Military commanders were standing the the AWAC's down while these runs were being made.
That can engender a degree of mistrust, when your ally is arming the people who may be firing at you.

Awww you spoilt it dza...

I wasn't interested whether it was the best, biggest, richest, most democratic or anything. Just what it was invloved in.

Yeah Red Cross is good.

Yes I saw that program Myrrdin. I think what angered the Norwegian (?) General when he was talking to the man who saw the aircraft was the fact that the American sergeant(?) just walked into his office and took the other chap away for questioning. No authority, no request, no please.

It was the arrogance and bully boy methods that was disturbing. If they could do that to their allies well one wets one's knickers doesn't one!
