What happens to the Republican Party when Donald Trump dies?

The GOP already released the genie from their bottle.

When their indicted former President croaks from what will probably be a massive heart attack, some other greedy and conflict-obsessed fascist who hates women, minorities, and immigrants of color will step forward and take his place as their leader.

Nobody can predict what happens to the Republican Party when Trump is gone, but the question is equally relevant for the Democratic Party.

It’s utterly amazing that with less than 11 months before Election Day, Trump is the betting odds favorite to win in 2024. People who follow my posts here will recall that I thought the GOP was done with Trump not so long ago.

Yet here he is, leading in nearly all national polls and leading by even greater margins in the most recent battleground states.

Who to thank or blame? Where to start?

Plenty of credit to spread around. Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary and her pals at Fusion GPS, the J6 Committee, overzealous prosecutors, and a compliant pack of lemmings in the corporate media and pundits have made him a martyr. The geniuses that have doubted down on an 81 year old president who the public sees as mentally and physically not up for the job deserve credit as well.

Both parties are a mess right now and the only thing we can say with certainty is that both will look very different in 2028.

From what I see or sense, its the democrats that should be worried about something like that but ya know, they have no one but Gordon Gekko from California and no one gives a shit about him.

He’s an old man, and years of living a playboy lifestyle have taken their toll. He probably doesn’t have much longer left.

But the Republican Party doesn’t seem to stand for anything except devotion to him. So what happens after Trump’s gone? Who assumes the mantle of leadership, and what policies will they run on?
When trump goes someone will create a series of nft cards celebrating his greatness, and offering the option of buying a sliver of the suit he was wearing at that time.

Or has that happened already?

Democrats are nothing close to normal rational politics.
I agree, from a Canadian point of view they are both FUBAR. But the Republicans are much further away from reality, than the Democratic party, it's so far that they have now left the galaxy.

My thoughts exactly. For half a century they won elections on implied bigotry - the Southern Strategy - but now that the party faithful have tasted the red meat of loud and proud racism, they're not going back.

The trouble for them is, no one else - including his own children - has the same deadly blend of ignorance and shamelessness that made Trump so very entertaining to his followers. Let's face it, that's part of his appeal. For them, it's "What will he do next to make libruls cry?" For us, it's, "If we have to live through this nightmare, at least we can look forward to the next so-stupid-it's-funny thing he says next." No one else has that formula down pat the way he does.

So my guess is we'll see at least a couple of election cycles of other Republicans trying to copy his style and failing miserably.

Yes. I was also wrong in 2016. Was pleasantly surprised by that outcome. Did you think Hillary would win? Did you think Biden’s polling numbers would be where they currently stand against a Deplorable under indictment in multiple cases? Lol

I did predict Hillary would lose in 2016 - and NOT based on polls, but on yard signs, and conversations with maaaany friends and family all around the country.

And I did think President Biden’s poll numbers would be in the range they are against the corrupt orange traitor right now. - I know how ignorant and morally bankrupt MAGAts are. - I also know how petulant and implacable "independent" and "progressive" voters are.

I also know a lot can change from now to the election.

If Trump died right now, you mean? They'd just carry on like they are with the same sort of divisive culture war politics, searching for a new kind of figurehead and leader at the same time. It might even be worse with Trump dead, causing an intensified fight and civil war within the party and establishment at large. There would be no going back to the Romney/McCain/Bush era as some people naively think if Trump is removed from politics or from life itself. It's more likely to accelerate the crisis further.

If the establishment and Democrats wanted a kinder version of what Trump became, they shouldn't have damaged Ross Perot politically in the 1990s, when he was correctly pointing out what NAFTA would mean for large numbers of workers across America, and wanting electronic democracy. There are several rumors about Perot's daughter and powerful people in the media as to why Perot pulled out of the presidential race for a time, and that the media were already using stories of his campaign being in "disarray" to force him out of the contest, hysterically saying that he'd finish in single digits in November if he didn't pull out of the contest. In June 1992, Perot had been leading both Bush Sr. and Clinton in the presidential race nationwide, at 39%. When Perot re-entered the contest and just before he took part in the first presidential debate, he was down at 7-9% in the polls. In the election, he won 18.9% of the vote, after pretty much winning the TV debates. Those powerful blackmailers didn't care as long as Perot finished third. When he was seriously threatening to finish first, then it was a very different story. Perot's 1993 TV debate with Al Gore, especially in hindsight, shows Perot was correct, yet it was used to sideline Perot politically because he spoke more like someone on the street would understand instead of like a soulless professional politician who constantly interrupts and says a lot without really saying anything at all.

What's the lesson here? Trump had to become so scandalous that he's almost immune to scandal. The Access Hollywood tape was supposed to finish Trump off politically. Look at how he responded instead. He bullied back, harder and nastier. He's getting prosecuted at the moment. How is he to respond? He's using talk of going after his opponents in the same way if he gets the power. And a lot of people in society are angry, and eager to fight.

The Republican Party died already. The lunatics in the MAGA party took it over, it will take a while to recover.
Recover to what?

The Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln's time died a long time ago, perhaps even as early as 1877 when they did a deal with Southern Democrats to end Reconstruction just so Republican Rutherford B. Hayes could be president, thereby betraying black people on a massive scale, condemning them to 90 years of Jim Crow laws. The Radical Republicans, who Lincoln opposed, were possibly as radically progressive as any capitalist politicians could be. They believed in full suffrage and civil rights for the freed slaves. Lincoln was a penpal of Karl Marx himself, who was clearly urging Lincoln to go further, such as abolishing slavery altogether rather than just opposing the expansion of slavery westwards. What happened in 1877 wrecked the vast majority of this Republican Party.

What about 1912, when Theodore Roosevelt and his supporters left to form the Progressive Party after Roosevelt failed to get the Republican nomination? The Republican Party's next few presidential candidates after this were considerably more conservative than Teddy Roosevelt (Hughes, Harding, and especially Coolidge).

And that's before we even get into Barry Goldwater's 1964 conservative campaign that changed presidential politics, and started the decades long change, or "switch", of the parties. Before Goldwater's campaign, Democrats were a mixture of northern and western liberals and southern racists and conservatives, and the Republicans were a mixture of liberals/moderates that were strongest in the northeast, most of the midwest and Oregon, and conservative moralists who were strong across the majority of the west. Up to 1932, most black people who had the vote voted Republican, from 1936-1960 the Republicans had a quarter to a third of the black vote, but since 1964 the Republican black vote has always been somewhere between 6-16%.

DeSantis?

DeSantis?
I doubt it. I think he's way too narrow minded. That trigger 6-week abortion law that he signed in Florida was astonishingly naive and parochial for somebody who was supposed to be running for president, i.e. on a nationwide level. The moment that DeSantis signed that law, Trump got the edge over DeSantis. Previously, DeSantis was rising and Trump was on the defensive with talk of DeSantis being "Trumpism without Trump's baggage".

I think DeSantis was out of touch on what Trump's appeal is. DeSantis went deeper into abortion restrictions and culture wars, instead of raging about the swamp and playing on people's concerns and fears about their jobs, money and living standards.

Trump is basically dead now. The Pubs will eventually nominate someone else.

What will Christmas become without Chrisitanity? It will still be a winter solstice holiday, like it was before Christianity. The political parties may have some platform changes, new personnel, new mascots, etc., but they will still be in business a long while, until we finally can't afford them anymore.

Awwww, hurting babyboobs feelings. That was his new guy.

Recover to what?

....
Recover from the position it finds itself in (or will find out when it wakes up).

Since Reagan there has been a move to the lunatic right, so that billionaires have tax breaks to allow them to purchase private islands or run vanity space missions. The religious right have abandoned any attempt to follow the teachings of the New Testament and select the worst parts of Leviticus to justify themselves. Trump gave the unpleasant fringe permission to behave appallingly towards anyone they see as different such as the disabled, foreigners, LGBTQ.

His supporters think that because he portrayed himself as a billionaire business mogul on a TV show, he must be telling them the truth whilst anyone who has a working brain can see that it's the opposite. Listen to his words! 'I have the constitutional right to lie to the electorate'. 'The only way I can lose any election is by vote-rigging.' 'When I'm elected I'll be a dictator'. ''I want to overturn the constitution'.

Wake up.

I don't think Trump's supporters care if he's lying or not. What they like about him is that he's made them feel empowered to wear their bigotry as a badge of honor. That's not changing.
The real bigot is Biden! Add to that every time that man opens his mouth it’s a lie. Millions of Americans see through Biden’s lies. Biden’s ineptitude will win for Trump. Americans are tired of being gaslighted by a feckless democrat party. The stain of antisemitism within the Democratic Party will destroy it. Well YB, you need a dose of self awareness. When democrats accuse pubs of unethical behavior you can rest assure the Dems are actually doing what they accuse pubs of doing. Trump will win 2024.
