I am curious, what does it take to make the "honor roll" in a public school nowdays? Is it different depending on the state?

When I was a kid, we had to make all A's to make the honor roll. It was something to be proud of. Now (here anyway) the kids have to make all A's OR B's. As long as there are no C's or worse, that is considered the cream of the crop.

It bothers me to see such a blatant example of dumbing down. Please tell me this is only here in my state.

(And do tell me what I have missed in the last week too, please--if anyone has any interresting threads that you think I should check out, please give me the link or tell me to look it up. Thanks.)

In my son's school, an overall average of 90 or above will keep you on the Honor Roll.

Hence, an occasional B or two may drop your average a bit, but not enough to prevent you from being on the Honor Roll.

in my province when I was going to school (grad in 93) honor roll was 95 and up

same school now honor roll is 70 and above

I don't know about public schools but I know what the honor roll is like at our school. A student needs to have an 85 average with no mark below 80 to achieve honors status. They have to maintain that for the full academic year.

Remembering back to school, I think it was quite similar.

I think it has something to do with a measurable pulse and detectable respiration. I'm not sure if brainwave activity is part of the equation, though.

On a serious vein, however, declining standards seem to be the rule. In 1978, the Navy was looking into revising it's technical manuals so that new recruits could understand them. I forget the exact grade level changes in consideration but it was a revision downward from something like a tenth grade level to an eighth grade level. Not a good sign nor a confidence inspiring assessment of the public education system, and this was 25 years ago.

i don't really agree with the above post, i'm 22 and have only been out of highschool for 3 years now (graduated when i was 19) and it seemed all pretty much normal stuff, yeah there's honors courses and stuff, but they're still easy, but back to the thread topic, at my old highschool there was an A and B honor roll, to make the B you had to have a GPA of 3.2 and to make the A you had to have at least a 3.7

When I was in high school (early-mid '90's), we had the principal's list, A honor roll, and B honor roll. Principal's list meant 95 and above. A honor roll meant nothing below 90. B honor roll meant nothing below an 85.

In the school where I teach, students must have an average of 90 with no grade below an 85 to make our honor roll.
