T minus about 6 weeks and I'll be moving out of this hellhole into my own place. (Hopefully, the divorce should be final about three months later.)

I don't have a lot of stuff and I know for a while I'll beliving pretty minimalist, but refresh my memory ... what am I going to be needing?

Are you starting completely from scratch?

Do you need basic stuff such as a toaster, pots, pans, etc?

I love to shop. I'd be more than happy to help :)

Yeah, it's that kind of basic stuff that I know I'll get to a new place and say "Damn, why didn't I think of that." I've got enough furniture, plates to eat off of, towels and silverwear. And I'm taking my goddamn big screen TV and the DVD player with me.

bed linens/pillows
towels and washcloths
cookware and utensils
a few plates and glasses
silverware
tv (remote control)
vcr/dvd
couch
easy chair
a floor lamp
a microwave
and a pc

Why do i have the 12 days of christmas running thru my head now?

Cleaning supplies like Windex, Comet and dish soap...an alarm clock and pillows :)

Here's my list:
  • 10" Teflon coated frypan/skillet
  • Couple of saucepans (with lids)
  • Microwave would be great (wish I had one)
  • Some miscellaneous crockery (plates, bowls, cups, &c.)
  • Some silverware (just a few of each unless you're planning on entertaining)
  • Bed linens
  • Towels
  • Tea kettle and teapot (I get coffee out--it's much better than anything I can make)
  • Computer--stay connected.
Television, radio, personal entertainment jazz--I play my CDs on the computer--that's up to your preference.

I'm gonna have a hell of a time finding room for those "ten ladies dancing." :D

Microwaves are cheap these days. I saw one for about $40 at Walmart last summer.

The pots and pans and cooking stuff sounds like a good idea. I never really cooked much here because the ex-SO was never really interested in anything but fast food. I have the feeling I'm going to be cooking a lot and starting to really teach myself how to do it.

So, who wants to be the vict ... I mean the taste tester for my first meal?

I just moved into my own space. I did NOT leave a hell hole, though. It was not a rending of the past at all. It was funny to size up what I wanted to take. I wanted some of my favorite pictures - motivational images so to speak - some lithos, and mostly pics of the family. I have tons of happy memories.

Practically speaking, though, I think a microwave is the most important item. But, I don't have one yet, so maybe that's why its so valuable to me. I will definitely keep an eye on this thread, DK.
Good luck.

Oh I forgot, hangers and a shower curtain :)

Yum! A home cooked meal. Wish I lived closer!

I'll volunteer.... You can feed me...

One thing I did not see was hangers.

Try to find an apartment with a washer and dryer. Believe it or not it does help to have one at your disposal.

Lightbulbs

Bed and linens

Towels

A shower curtain

toilet paper

Well basically this can be a long list. What you need to do is see what the apartment has to offer. Work from there. Then go in with your list you have composed from here and by self to a wall mart or equivalent value type of store. Try not to go overboard and it will add up. Good Luck to you! Let me know when I can come over for the first meal in question. I'll bring the tums.

Peace,
Tulip

I, too, just made this move, and the things I forgot were:

a COFFEE POT
Microwave
Steak Knives
Wine tool

Most Important Thing I did NOT forget:

Bottle of Dewars

Happy moving!

Good to see I have your confidence. ;)

We all have to start some place...

Don't look towards me to cook. I can follow a recipe book as well as the next guy. You will be fine D... one day at a time. Just don't go overboard until you get into the place. As time goes on you will see what you do or don't need.

Peace,
Tulip

Very good encouragment, tulip. Keeping a patient, positive attitude is the difference. It is our disposition and outlook that effect our happiness far more than our circumstances.

Thank you Erosman

I can imagine how difficult it is for D right now however it is a brand new beginning in his next phase in life. Anything is possible if he allows it.

It is not easy to start over and what not but to start fresh sounds like a better idea than to have to sort through tons and tons of stuff. Sometimes it is better to simply let go of things that truly are not that important and to move on. I have seen too many fight over steak knives and other things. They do it just to be spiteful and you know what they get stuck in that revenge mode. If they just let it go and move on it makes it easier for the transition.

In my opinion I would rather start with a bare place and buy what I want than to have a full house and decide on what to get rid of. I hope that makes sense. I guess what I am saying it would be my choice as to what I want in my new home, etc.

Peace,
Tulip
