Couple of reasons. It's public and safe. It shows us whether you can be silly and make us laugh. A sense of humor is important. And it gives an indication of how easily frustrated you get. Anger threshold. Plus, if the date is going well, you can 'teach' us how to swing.

Interesting. My first job as a teenager was at a place that had two miniature golf courses, a small nine-hole golf course, and a driving range. Perhaps because of that experience, I've thought there's something reciprocal about low-key competition--women want to know that men aren't going to lose their shit over something meaningless, while at the same time men enjoy seeing that women are willing to compete with good humor. Always struck me as an interesting dynamic.
