What are you reading at the moment?

Charles Stross - Quantum of Nightmares, #11 in the Laundryverse series.

This series started out as a "secret magic" setting, but by Book 11 an avatar of Nyarlathotep is Prime Minister of the UK, superheroes work for the police, and an army of dark elves has recently trashed Leeds. Impressed by the way Stross makes even the banal horrific, though this book would've been about 30 pages shorter if he didn't spend time recapping things that the reader already knows.

Sally Rooney - Conversations with friends

"Frances, Bobbi, Nick and Melissa ask each other endless questions. As their relationships unfold, in person and online, they discuss sex and friendship, art and literature, politics and gender, and, of course, one another.
Twenty-one-year-old Frances is at the heart of it all, bringing us this tale of a complex menage-a-quatre and her affair with Nick, an older married man.
You can read Conversations with Friends as a romantic comedy, or you can read it as a feminist text."

I'm reading with some misgivings because I'm not a fan of soaps or endlessly discussing the dynamics of relationships, which is basically what this book is. There are some interesting writing quirks, where speech is seldom encased in "" convention but free-form ...
Were you always this skinny? Bobbi said. I remembered you bigger.

My Lit editor would have a fit and it is confusing at times. I see it is due to be serialised and I hope they cast Colin Firth because I have him fixed as the male protagonist in my head. It has been well reviewed, is LGBT friendly and the author is autistic but it isn't a book about either. All the same, I find the author's style refreshing.

Giovanni Guareschi, The Little World of Don Camillo.

Read these many years ago, happy to find them as good as I remembered.

Five Quarters of the Orange, Joanne Harris. I love her imagery, how she paints with words and she'll give me more confidence with my own words.

Clinical Guide to Early Interventions for Children with Autism.
-Giacomo Vivanti, Kristen Bottema-Beutel, and Lauren Turner-Brown
