Manning : The Root, The Leaf, And the Bone

Another first listen. Opinion later...

(I feel kinda guilty about leaving this on the shelf for so long, as Guy is a friend :( )

Good songwriting, interesting instrumentation with very good performances, nice tunes.

So-so vocals.

I know a LOT of people who swear that Guy's music is at the leading edge of 3rd-wave prog. I think it's pretty damned good, but would be up among the best-of-breed if he employed a vocalist.

He's very sensitive about this, though, and is convinced that his vox are good. Make a comment about the vocals, and he'll challenge you immediately! :D

That may be, yet, if you listen to the words "Just turn your head and spit me out" bring a whole new meaning to the song. My very first thought was that it was about a blowjob. But that may be wrong.

I'd guess it was both. Blowjob/spit-out as a metaphor for feeling disappointed/unappreciated/whatever.

Odin's Court : Turtles All the Way Down

Asia's Resonace sucks major donkey schlong. There are maybe two fair cuts on it, they rest sounds like a one man band playing a kazoo.

One of those is 'The Valley Of Rocks' which is pretty cool.

Guns'n'Roses - Paradise City

Thanks to the Burnout Paradise video game, this song gets me in the mood to seriously burn some rubber.

Love it; my son tells me it's what will be played at my [eventual] funeral.

When a friend passed away many years ago, we arranged for Elton John's (all-instrumental) "Funeral For A Friend" to be played, and faded out just before it morphed into the rather cheezy "Love Lies Bleeding".

There wasn't a dry eye in the house (to coin a cliche).

My kids can play that at my funeral.

I want Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" played at my funeral, though I won't haunt anyone for playing "Funeral for a Friend."

ProFusion : Tower

Hmmm -above average prog-metal. You get the impression they're trying too hard, and throwing every gimmick and prog cliche into the mix. Some of it is very listenable, some of it is - okay.

Twelfth Night : Live and Let Live

Another first listen. Opinion later...

These guys are usually good middle-of-the-road neo. Let's see how this double-CD goes down.

Aah jeez - it's a live recording. Too much on-stage goofing around, and so-so engineering. I don't have the patience.

Big Big Train : English Electric - Parta One and Two

Another first listen. Opinion later...

I have everything these guys have done - and for some reason they never clicked with me. But this dual-album got rave reviews, so I'm hoping to be blown away...
