Western Civilisation just isn't very... Western. Some of the bases: Christianity - an Eastern religion with roots in the Middle East and North Africa (Israel/Palestine, Egypt). Actually, the most ancient extant churches of Christianity might be the Coptic of Egypt and the Ethiopic of Ethiopia. Mathematics (international but with concepts like the 0 from India - oh, and all that our numerals came from the east. Science and the rule of reason - well, it wouldn't have got there without Algebra (Arabic) and with the great translation that brought us lost works of Greek and Roman philosophers, scientists and mathematicians. Even the main Western languages are Indo-european in origin.

So I really want to know what's so Western about Western Civilisation. And also how 'civilised' it is...

My comment about plague was to point out that a lot of very strange factors have affected the progress of our society historically. But of course people are not able to understand nuance. It requires a degree of reading and education.

There's an argument that Western Civilisation depends on cats. Without cats, vermin gets out of hand and the diseases borne by vermin, or the fleas on the vermin, cause all sorts of issues. But then, Western Civilisation could equally have depended on plague - because the great plagues halved the population in some areas of the UK leading to a marked increase in wealth for common people and the ability to afford extras. It also strengthened their hands in terms of what they could demand in pay, and in conditions.

The Quiet War on Manhood​

Since the mid-20th century, Western culture has undergone an ideological shift that redefined traditional masculinity as something outdated, even dangerous. The cultural shifts of the 1960s promised liberation but gradually replaced personal responsibility and family order with self-gratification and state dependence. Where strong families once formed the backbone of the West, an alliance of ideological radicalism and excessive consumerism has turned both men and women into disconnected individuals -- easier to manipulate, easier to control.

This erosion of masculine identity didn’t happen by accident. It was shaped through decades of social conditioning that cast male authority as oppressive, fatherhood as optional, and discipline as cruelty.
