A new Pope has been elected. It is amazing to see the throngs of people rush to St. Peter's Square. It sure has been an fascinating few weeks.

I am heartend for the world. I never expected the millions to arrive in Rome these last weeks and now to see this excitment. It feels good to me and I wanted to share that.

that it is... and I'm not even catholic...
but I am pleased for the catholic church... very pleased indeed

I have such a feeling of hope. Seeing these people rushing and chanting is fantastic. I recall when Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II were both elected but ....... I guess it could be that I'm that much older, or the troubles that have held the Church down, but this feels good, deeply good.

I am thrilled you ladies are feeling this as well.  For you both.

Oh fine -- now I have to go over to the What Made You Smile Today thread -- cause you just did. Thank you for sharing. :D

Even I as a committed atheist have been touched by what has happened in the last few weeks and the obvious love that a lot of people around the world had for Pope John Paul II. I hope that the new pope is able to continue his good work.

Hey, no one beats us Roman Catholics when it comes to ritual and tradition.

It sure has been quite interesting and joyous. I'm glad you are touched Wanderer.... :rose:

These thoughts and feelings expressed here are proof that Lit is not only a place for adult themes, but it is a community of real people living real lives.

so agreed Cate...

I'm thrilled.

I don't buy into religion.

And now a new person to support that view.

But to those that do, Congrats! Hope it makes you feel better.

No offense intended folks, just a personal point of view.

well add italian to it and mamma mia!!!!
..You have to be Italian when1. You're 5'4", can benchpress 325 pounds, shave twice a day, and you still cry when your mother yells at you. 2. You carry your lunch in a produce bag because you can't fit 2 mortadella "sandwiches", 4 oranges 2 bananas and pizzelles into a regular paper lunch bag. 3. Your father owns 5 houses, has $300,000 in the bank, but still drives a '76 Black Mercury. 4. Your mechanic, plumber, electrician, accountant and travel agent are all blood relatives. 5. You consider dunking a pack of Stella D'Oro "S" cookies in milk as a nutritious breakfast. 6. You live in a 900 square foot bungalow, but still have 2 kitchens (one in the basement). 7. Your 2 best friends are your cousin and brother-in-law's brother-in-law. 8. You are a card-carrying VIP at more than 5 after hours clubs. 9. You have at least 5 cousins living in the same town or street. All 5 of those cousins are named after your grandfather or grandmother. 10. A high school diploma and 1 year of community college has earned you the title of "professor" among your aunts. 11. You are on a first name basis with at least 8 banquet hall owners. 12. You only get one good shave from a disposable razor. 13. If someone in your family grows beyond 5' 9", it is presumed his mother had an affair. 14. There are more than 28 people in your bridal party. 15. You netted more than $50,000 on your first communion.

heres more..my mother would kill me but these are all true :p

You know you grew up in an Italian family when..

You've had at least one relative who wore a black dress every day for
an entire year after the funeral.

You spent your entire childhood thinking what you ate for lunch was
pronounced "sangwich".

Your family dog understood fluent Italian.

Every Sunday afternoon of your childhood was spent visiting your
grandparents.

You've experienced the phenomena of 150 people fitting into 50 square
feet of yard during a family cookout.

You were surprised to discover the FDA recommend you eat three
balanced meals a day, not seven.

You ate pasta for dinner at least four times a week.

You grew up thinking no fruit or vegetable had a fixed price at the
public market and that everything was negotiable through haggling.

You were forced to watch Lawrence Welk and Ed Sullivan every Sunday
night.

You were as tall as your grandmother by the age of seven.

You never knew anyone who's last name didn't end in a vowel.

You thought black nylons were supposed to be worn rolled to the knees.

You were surprised to find out that wine was actually sold in stores.

You never ate meat on Christmas Eve or any other Friday for that
matter.

You ate your salad after the main course.

You thought Catholicism was the only religion in the world.

Your were beaten at least once with a wooden spoon.

You thought every meal had to be eaten with a hunk of bread in your
left hand.

You learned to play bocce before entering grade school.

You can understand Italian but you can't speak it.

You have at least one ancestor who helped dig the Erie canal.

You grew up thinking a toilet was called the buc-a-house.

You were surprised to learn most kitchen utensils had another nam e
which didn't end in a vowel.

You always heard your father utter the word "tootsoon" or "moolinjon"
every time you drove past a black person.

All of your uncles fought in a World War.

You have at least six male relatives named Tony, Joe, Frank, Nick, or
Sam.

You drank wine before you were a teenager.

You felt a sense of pride after seeing the movie "The Godfather".

Your yard didn't have one patch of dirt that didn't have a flower or a
vegetable growing out of it.

Your grandparent's furniture was as comfortable as sitting on
sandpaper.

You thought that speaking loud was normal.

You thought cookie cakes and the Tarantella were common at all
weddings.

Your mother seemed overly protective of the males in the family no
matter what their age.

Every lunch meat you ate as a child ended in a vowel.

There was a crucifix in every room of the house, including the garage.

Your brother never had to wash dishes because it was considered
women's work.

You weren't comfortable dating a boy without getting approval from
your father.

You know what lemon ice is.

DLL, that must be wonderful ..... I wish I was there too. I feel the urge to go to my church to say a prayer and be among others I think would be there too.

Wanderer - hands down I win don't I? lol It's so nice to have you back a while.

BabyD, I think we've known a long while this isn't a 'porn' board. It is such a good community.

Niiteshade, no offense taken whatsoever. I have my own thoughts about religion, it is inherently flawed since it was created by man. I have belief in God, a Higher Power and since I was raised as a Roman Catholic these traditions are what are familar so it is like walking in comfy shoes if you will.

I enjoy the feeling of believing and sharing that but know that it is a personal choice to believe as they wish.

Yes Cate you did win that one. But the real competition comes soon and you know what that is.

Good see that Dreary Long Lists hasn't changed.......DLL you make me laugh.

As a non Catholic (raised Lutheran), I just want to add it is wonderful to see the out pouring of emotion and love the Catholic people and people of all faiths the world over have shown during this difficult time.

The love and admiration for Pope John Paul II, the mourning of his passing, the celebration of his life and his devoted service to the church is touching for us all.

Now we see the entire world coming together to embrace a new era, one with continued hope, love and support for people all over the world. People of all faiths joining together in a show of support and love.

Very touching indeed.

Again, while I'm not catholic, and not religious, I had/have great admiration for Pope John Paul II. He did alot of good in this world, brought people of all faiths together, made alot of changes, forced other nations to look, see, understand and make changes...

He was a man to be admired. I do hope that the new pope will continue his work, and not take a step backwards.
