Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire was on the radio on my drive home from the store this evening. That song probably taught me more about modern history (1950s to 1980s) than any other source. I think it should be required for every student to listen & research the lyrics to that song.

Anyone else love this song as much as me? It's still stuck in my head as I type. :D

I think that's where we signed the peace agreement with North Korea to end the Korean War.

and what the hell is panmunjom?

Panmunjom is the "truce village" that straddles the border between North Korea and South Korea in the middle of the Demilitarized Zone that has split this peninsula since the Korean War ended in 1953. The DMZ is probably the most fortified border on Earth, with more than a million soldiers facing each other with enough artillery to obliterate each other in a matter of hours. Tension constantly runs high here -- more than 50 Americans, 1,000 South Koreans and countless North Koreans have died in skirmishes along the DMZ in the past 40 years, including one recently. The DMZ is dotted with land mines and razor wire and concrete tank bunkers and Communist soldiers dug into mountainsides behind cast-iron "blast doors" to protect them against bombs dropped from American B-52s.

Thank you for posting the lyrics, PC. I remember the first time I heard the song, I thought he was singing "burning jets" instead of Bernie Goetz. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what burning jets he was referring to.

miles is correct.
They still hold talks there.
Fortunatly the truce is still holding.

Weird Mischka, I relate.

I thought he said "trouble in the sewers" not "Suez", like it was in that movie about the sewer creatures.

Anyway, this song has a pretty cool video.

How 'bout that. You learn something new everyday. Was I the only one who paid less attention in class to the wars where the US didn't kick serious ass?

Now if she can explain the pathophysiology of emphysema I'll be really impressed.

So who wants to post the Lit version. I can't find my copy. :(

Funny you should say that, my 8th grader is doing an extra credit report on the song. She has to write a paragraph on each person and place mentioned. Bonus points if she can sing it in front of the class.

If anyone is curious as to what each reference in the song is, try this site:

thanks, Dix. that was a masterpiece.

Perhaps we could get a verse dedicated to trolls, though (you could rhyme it with Dee_Cole). ;)

DCL - that was GREAT! *smile*

And Oliver Clozoff - this is for you:

Pathophysiology of Emphysema

1. characteristics

a. degeneration of lung tissue (irreversible) -- pathological diagnosis

b. high RV and FRC and TLC

c. low VC (frequently)

d. high Raw on expiration, while inspiration may be normal (check-valve effect)

2. physiological basis

a. loss of lung tissue causes RV^^ & FRC^^ & Ppl^^ in the relaxed position

b. forced expiration leads to further Ppl^^, which increases airway compression on expiration

c. hence, on expiration, increased airway resistance and gas trapping

Dillinger, it could also be explained in this reader-friendly format although I am still trying to figure out if you are trying to impress Oliver or not! ;)

Emphysema is a general term that refers to air-filled expansions in tissues. Emphysema (also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD) is a group of lung diseases that are characterized by a reduced ability of the lungs to oxygenate the blood and the shortness of breath is usually caused by chronic tobacco smoking. Its hallmark is accumulation of air and loss of elastic recoil in the lung tissues.

Emphysema and chronic bronchitis, generally occur together. Emphysema develops over many years - as the small air sacs within the lungs (alveoli)are gradually destroyed, usually by cigarette smoke. As a result the surface area necessary to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide becomes inadequate, and patients become more and more short of breath.

Chronic bronchitis refers to an ongoing inflammation of the lining of the lung's breathing tubes (bronchi) caused by bacterial infection and, usually, smoke irritation. As the inflammation progresses, the bronchi, fill with mucus and grow narrower, hindering the flow of air. This results in a chronic cough, as the body attempts to rid itself of the excess mucus that is irritating the lungs. This mucus is also know as phlegm or sputum.

The pathophysiology = Progressive dyspnea, over inflated lungs, barrel chest, hyperresonance, and distant breath sounds.

But that's just off the top of my head! And I am full of hot air myself! :)

Pretty impressive, junior medical students. Now I want you to be prepared to present a case at Grand Rounds tomorrow.

Dill - if you actually understand the pulmonary physiology jargon you just posted I'd be mucho impressed (but I smell a cut and paste job)

Barb - you're pretty much right on except for your assertion that emphysema is synonymous with COPD. COPD generally refers to the constellation of obstructive lung diseases including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. But otherwise you're right on.

See the two of you tomorrow morning at rounds at 6. Have all the patients seen and your notes written.

And don't forget -

every patient gets a rectal.

I did listen and study it in my SS class.
I'm guessing my teacher was as taken with it as you are.

I love that song too. Well, I love anything by Billy Joel. I had to do a report on that song when I was in seventh grade and the song had first come out. God I can't believe that was in 1988!

Never said:

Just to give a glimpse of the depth of my nerdiness, I studied the song of my own volition. My best friend and I spent a weekend at the library looking up all the people and events.

We've now moved on to much more important matters. Like memorizing every line to Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail.
