VPN will do it, but you may or may not need it.

First some quesitons:
1) Do you have dial-up or high speed internet (dsl/cable)?
2) What operating system you use at home?

Here is how to do it using Xp: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315328

Do you want to know how to setup VPN or how to connect to your pc via VPN?

Whole host of options - check out the following (free for single connection - non commercial use)
NTR Cloud http://www.ntrglobal.com/freecloud
LogMeIn Free https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/
TeamViewer http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
Chrome Remote Desktop - Need Google Chrome and a gmail/Google account:

Remote Desktop Connection that comes with Windows is the cleanest and possibly the fastest. There is also one for a Mac to connect to a PC https://www.microsoft.com/mac/remote-desktop-client‎ (works well). You will need to get the IP address/number of the host computer (one being accessed). If the host computer has a static IP you will only need to retrieve this once - if the computer uses a dynamic IP - well this may change from time to time. If the host PC is turned on most days then in my experience the IP won't change. If however the PC is turned off for a number of days a new IP may be allocated next time the computer is turned on. The other options I have provided connect differently and dynamic IPs are not an issue. I am not a tech - so may be wrong on a couple of things there.

I use NTR Cloud regularly to maintain a computer in another country. File transfer & remote printing. You can black out host screen and prevent mouse and keyboard use. Works well from PC to PC. With Mac to PC some features are missing and the set up is annoying on the Mac

TeamViewer - been using this one lately connecting with a PC in my own city - thumbs up.

Tried the Chrome Remote Desktop recently - seemed a little slow

Work out your requirements and check them against the specs. Remote printing, moving files between computers etc.

and just to confuse the hell out of you

What ever one you use - when asked how many colours you want to view the remote computer in choose thousands - not full colour (millions of colours) - full colour may cause a lagging connection.

No matter how fast your connections are there will be a noticeable slowness in the response of the remote computer. Just have to deal with it.
