Funny how that reminds me of...
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

from your sig line, are you into jap anime?? if so, you need to check out the "i hate it when" and the "i love it when" threads. Bash has 2 somewhat neat anime's in them.

My very simple interpretation of the poem (and they are always subject to a person's own views ) is that you have control. You have a dream, you can not do anything about it and let it dry up; you can keep picking at it, till you get obsessed and still don't do anything w/ it but think of it; you can become bitter because of it (the festering/ raw meat ref); or you can do something... let your dream explode in all it's glory to be fulfilled. Granted, the comparisons are a bit dark (rotten meat? blech) but also very fitting for what many do w/ their lives/dreams.

The poem, written in the 1960s I believe, refers to the civil rights movement in the United States. I don't think Hughes addressed it at the individual level--he was referring to the calls for the African-American community to have more patience in its demands for civil rights and equal opportunity--and that the expectation of patience was perhaps ill-advised.
I don't mean this to launch a political polemic or as an incendiary--it's just for your information.
