i have been looking at vibrators, and i am new to this whole thing, i've never had one, how do i know how big/what kind to get? thanks

not being silly, i promise, but... what do you want?
clit stimulation?
g-spot?
both?
are you a buzzy buzzy kind of person? or a ummmm that's good one?
are you looking for yourself?
as part of a couple?
might help us to respond is all

well, its for me and my boyfriend to "play" with... and i think im gonna get more than one... one for clit and one for g-spot... or one for both. i dont know...

my 3 1/2 cents

i have 2. i got one of the non-dildo looking ones that looks kinda like a bullet. y'know, long and sleek. think they're more the "personal massagers" than a "vibrator"... I don't like that one too much, i's kinda urm...hard and impersonal... for lack of a better word :)

so, i recently got 1 that is more jelly-like and has better movement. it's waterproof too which is cool (haven't tried THAT part yet), but i prefer the jelly one...

my 3 1/2 cents (finally!) is to get 1 and try it. if you don't like it, find something you do like... that's half the fun!

As for the size, I would suggest going for larger, rather than smaller; if you find it too big, you don't have to insert it to the full length of the Vibrator.

A starting point would be the size of your partners penis, providing he is a man.

I started with a vibrating dildo, aproximately 8" long and 1 1/2" thick, silicone sleeve. It turned out to be my favorite one.

I also experimented with other things, different shapes, different types... my best advice, is go with your gut instinct, get more, experiment, and find what works best for you.

thanks everyone for the advice. i think i am going to get one... or two... heheh sometime later this week. i have a friend who recommended a shop to go to around my house so i think im going to pay them a visit.

My first (and only so far) is a nice 7" long one. It's not too big or small for me at all. It's quiet, jelly-like, waterproof, and best of all it was only about $30. :) Damn college budget...

I just went for the one that would give me the most options for my money. I didn't want anything too fancy... just a simple vibe. :)

This is my first time posting on this site but I am a "connoisseur" of vibrators so I have several. I have the Magnifique vibrator from Natural Contours for just straight hard type vibrations. It is nice to take travelling because it doesnt look like a vibrator (you know penis looking or like a regular dildo type vibrator) so not so embarrasing going through the X ray machines. I have a few jelly type ones that are soft and flexible as well as some that are waterproof which I love to use inside me. The harder ones I find are easier to use just to stimulate the clit but not penetrate yourself with. Also I bouht a G-Spot vibrator and it has been wonderful although it was a hard plastic one (didnt realize that when I bought it but OOOOHHH baby) it is one that has little bumps on it as well as the up-turned tip. Another thing we I have found (hubby and I are very adventurous) is to buy a really big "butt plug" that vibrates and it has the really big bulb on it and I can insert that and get it vibrating (hands free) while hubby goes down on me. There are several out there...it just depends on how you plan on using it. If you just want clit stimulation either soft or hard will work..it is all a matter of feel. If you want just to penetrate yourself usually softer is much better and easier to use. If you want g-spot my friend just got one today that angles to different angles with a "softer" tip on it and she swears by it.

Hope this helps a little bit!

I got my first ever vibrator just last November. I went into Ann Summers and spent about half an hour looking at all the different kinds. My gut instinct was to go for one called a Rampant Rabbit, which was a dildo shaped vibrator with clit stimulator attached. But due to damn student finace, I went with one called a Twist and Shout, a standard 6 inch vibrator/dildo but with about a dozen large raised bumps (also in an attractive seethru purple silicone sleeve with silver glitter!) It went thru AAA batteries faster than anything, but it felt good.

Unfortunately, I didn't realise that it wasn't waterproof until AFTER I took it in the bath :( . I've almost saved up enough now to get that Rampant Rabbit though, and this time I'll make sure it's rechargable!

One last note - 6 inches really isn't that impressive, go for a minimum 8 inches. Also, if you have the money for it, get one with a detachable clit stimulator, that way you have the option!

It's already been said,

but bears saying again,
if you are looking for penetration look for something soft and flexible, after all, your partners penis is not made of hard plastic and this is the pleasurable sensation you are trying to mimic here. If you are feeling truly adventurous and have a bit of cash to blow try also looking for something mountable - we're talking suction cup not hardware so don't panic- which allows for a variation on the pentration position.

Try to steer away from the " novelty" types of vibrators. You'll know then as soon as you see them, generally foolishly shaped and colored with some sort of giggle inducing name. These are meant more as shower/gag gifts then anything else.

As others have said, better to start larger then smaller. I foolishly began with a small pocket type vibe and found that it was ok for brief clitoral stimulation, but was virtually useless for penetration.
Find something w/ varying speeds so that you can dial up your own perfect rhythm and NO fast and faster don't count as varying speeds. My bad experience with a clitoral stimulator was that no matter what speed I set it to after a few moments the vibration would almost become irritating since even slow was to fast.
Personally I prefer mine w/ balls but you may not.

Other then that I would suggest you just go and have a good time looking. Don't be shy about asking the sales staff, the girl at the store where I shop was actually incredibly well informed and helped me make a great selection. Don't go in expecting bargain basement prices either. Self pleasure does not come cheap!, and make certain it's either rechargable or you stick up on batteries cuz many of these things can seriously drain battery power.

thanks alot guys. we finally decided on a 8" long, 1 1/2 " wide and it is wonderful! The giy there was also really helpful! Thanks!
