Vermont's Right Not to Bear Arms

Currently the only state that allows its citizens to carry a concealed weapon without a permit, it may soon be the first to require a permit for the unarmed in its ranks. In what could be the most extreme interpretation of the Second Amendment's tricky syntax yet, a Vermont state legislator recently introduced a bill requiring all unarmed Vermont citizens to pay $500 for the privilege of not owning a gun.

Under the bill, adults who choose not to own a weapon would be required to register their name, address, Social Security number, and driver's license number with the state. Those of military age, with the exception of police and members of the armed forces, would be required to pay the $500 fine.

The assumption here is that there's a gun or twelve in damn near every house outside of the urban areas. It's a relatively safe assumption.

Alaska is another state that does not require a permit to carry concealed. Then again, I was informed (once again) by a company in the lower 48 that Alaska is not part of the Continental US, and they will not ship overseas. Amazingly they will ship to Hawaii.

Nope. I was traveling through Ohio not too long ago, and was having trouble paying with my debit card. The cashier took one look at the card (Alaska USA Credit union) and said they have problems with foreign cards working, then recommended I go to the bank and exchange my currency for American money.
