Some of you may know that my SO whisked me off to Venice for the Valentine hols, well I just wanted to let you know that it is a VERY beautiful place!

There are some really lovely buildings, and although I knew it was all on canals, I didn't comprehend how much water there was there...lol

The weather wasn't great, it was a bit cold and wet - but it didn't make that much difference to be honest, it was still lovely - though it must be magical in the sunshine!

I will try and post some pics of when we were there at some point.

and oh, BTW - he asked me the "big one" while we were there and I accepted... hows that for romance!

(I just hope that I get away without the dry cleaning bill for the hotel sheets... Their crisp white linen wasn't so white after the red rose petals were sprinkled on them....  )

WoHooo!!

CONGRATS!!!!!!!

Where did he ask you? Was he down on one knee? TELL US.... c'mon you know how nosey we are!!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

'singing' someone's getting married... someone's getting married

Halo :rose:

Congrat, Viv. I know how much fun you had. And I'm glad you had one ro 2 for me as well. :D

For the nosey ones...

Well yes it was on one knee... :D

It was meant to be on the "brige of sighs" as it sounded like the place to do it, but the bridge is in the Doge's Palace and that closed at 3:30pm, we got there at 3:35pm... sod's law!

So instead we went to the next bridge along that canal and he asked "in sight" of the bridge of sighs instead...

:rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:

My Valentines prezzie to him was the "mood setting" in the hotel room...

A nice big bed, with white linen, sprinkled with sented red rose petals and hearts, candles, a bottle of bubbly and some chocolate... lets just say we had fun, and I might, if you're good, think about writting a story about it for you! :D

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaagh the wonders of Venice...

The Grand Canal, the Bridge of Sighs, the Doges Palace, St Marks Square.

The pigeons that fly at the sound of the carillons, the basilica with its frescos.

The cafes with the attentive waiters, the glass blowing factories with their pretty pretty wares.

The old family palaces sinking slowly like the rest of the city, the church on every street corner, the waterbusses and water taxi's and the gondoliers plying backwards and forwards across the waterways.

The wonderfully carved griffins the symbol of the city, the old Lions heads found in the older buildings (for informing on your friends and neighbours). The fact that this is the place that putting your head in the Lions mouth had real meaning.
If you informed you had to sign the paper you informed on, if the person who you informed against was found to be innocent, then you faced the penalty for what ever he would have been sentenced to had he been found guilty.

What a wonderful rounded history the city has, I am almost home sick for the travels of my youth to such places.

EZ

Ps. The Bridge of Sighs is so called as it runs from the Doges Palaces to the city jail. Prisoners who had just been condemmed were often heard to sigh with the wait of the justice that had been handed out to them. Perhaps this is your good fortune that you got there late? Congratulations anyway.
