I'm new to the Lit world & although I have managed to figure out how to go to certain forums & threads, I am still frustrated at my general technical incompetence. I have several questions & I am hoping someone can help me here. Here's my "top 10" for now:

1 - Sometimes when I click on "quote" it shows up as a separate grey box w/ their comments inside of it & other times it simply shows up as part of my own posting. Am I doing something wrong?

2 - How do I do the "multiple quote" thing? I've seen some posts where they quote several comments & respond to each individually w/in the same posting.

3 - How do I find specific threads / posts again? I have accidentally found some of the threads again only to lose them the next day. I do see a place in the control panel to add subscribed threads, but i don't know how to put them there.

4 - How do I add links to my posts?

5 - How do I upload pictures?

6 - What is an avatar (I get that it is an image of self for online purposes) and how do I create one / see others'? Are there rules about their content?

7 - What is PM? I don't mean the evening - - someone once said, "If you want to chat more, PM me." Was this an error? Did they mean IM me? Is there a difference?

8 - How do I change the phrase that shows beneath my screen name? I've seen some that are very specific - - and others (like mine) seem to be a Lit default.

9 - How do I find the Playground? I do not see it on the main page, but when I click on "new posts" the games will show up (sometimes) & I can link from there.

10 - How do I add multiple icons to my message? How do I create new icons? I've seen some that have fantastic icons, but I only have the "standard" 14 to chose from for my messages.

Thank you to ANYONE who can help with these questions. I look forward to learning more about how to navigate my way through this site. I have truly enjoyed my experiences online so far.

Always,
Denali Rayne

You'll find most of the answers to your question in the Blank Manual at the top of the page!

Good luck.

Most of your questions are answered in the FAQs Before Posting sticky (also found near the top of the main How To page). All of the questions I didn't answer here can be found in there.

Probably not. The system has some hiccups once in awhile, and/or it probably has something to do with your computer configuration.

2 - How do I do the "multiple quote" thing? I've seen some posts where they quote several comments & respond to each individually w/in the same posting.
In this post, I highlighted the text I wanted to go in each quote box, and hit the
quote.gif
(quote) button at the top of the reply box.

You can also type [*quote] text you're quoting[/quote*] (but take out the asterisks) to make multiple quotes.

When I quote multiple people in one post, I simply right-click on the Quote button under each post I want to quote, open it in a new tab/window, and the cut and paste the text from the new tabs/windows into one post.

3 - How do I find specific threads / posts again? I have accidentally found some of the threads again only to lose them the next day. I do see a place in the control panel to add subscribed threads, but i don't know how to put them there.
Before you respond to a thread, there's a drop-down box below the text box that allows you to select a subscription option. Select the option you want, and it'll show up in your CP's subscribed threads list, and/or send you an email when there are new responses.

You can also subscribe to all of the threads you post to by changing the option in your User CP, and of course you can unsubscribe to specific threads at any time thereafter.
7 - What is PM? I don't mean the evening - - someone once said, "If you want to chat more, PM me." Was this an error? Did they mean IM me? Is there a difference?
A Private Message. It's like an e-mail within the bulletin board, whereas an IM is more like a real-time conversation using a client like Yahoo or MSN.

9 - How do I find the Playground? I do not see it on the main page, but when I click on "new posts" the games will show up (sometimes) & I can link from there.
Scroll to the top of this page. Do you see the "Main Literotica Forums" link at the very top? Click on that to see all of the sub-forums.

Or, go to Personals, and The Playground will be listed as a sub-forum near the top of the page.
10 - How do I add multiple icons to my message? How do I create new icons? I've seen some that have fantastic icons, but I only have the "standard" 14 to chose from for my messages.
You can't add multiple icons to the title of your message. You can add as many smilies (on the right hand side of each reply box - if you don't see them, your browser has a problem) as you want, though. If you want custom smilies, you have to go through the procedure for inserting images directly into a post, as described in the FAQs Before Posting sticky.

Wow - thank you for your thorough responses! I did check out the General FAQ & Blank Manual threads as suggested. It did answer a lot of my general questions. I am sure it will take me a while to digest it all but this gives me a great place to start.

Thanks again - I sincerely appreciate all the patient, gentle responders I've found here on Lit.

I am still stuck on this one. I think I have clicked on every button I can find & I still can't find one that allows me to do this.

I do see the Default Thread Subscription but I do not understand the options. Could you please explain which of them would do what you described above?

Thank you (again!)

Go to User CP click on Edit Options, the screen posted below will appear, select an option in the drop down box under the Default Thread Subscription Mode heading.

Edit: I just read your post properly  Instant email notification will give you what you want.
You may need to log out and back in to reset cookies.

possibly beating the dead horse of semantics . . .

Perhaps. What if I want the threads I create or post to be included in this shortcut list, but I do NOT (necessarily) want or need to be notified via email that someone else had responded to it.

Is that possible?

Or do I have to select one of the notification options to have my thread responses automatically saved?

hyperlinks in signature line

I have read & re-read the FAQ's & Blank Manual & although I vaguely remember reading about how to include a hyperlink in your signature line I can not seem to find that information again.

Could you please direct me?

I would like to include a link to my own submissions on Lit - - - how do I track down the direct link to my stories?

Hopefully soon I will figure out this blessed avatar dilemma & will add a pic to my profile. I have followed all the directions for resizing, but even when I have a pic at 150X150 pixels (& according to my files 14.8K) it says it is still too big. I saw there was a specific thread for someone to help me resize my image, I was just hoping to learn how to do it on my own rather than have someone do it for me.

Thank you! I am "fleshing out" my profile & other options slowly but surely. :) I even managed to figure out the little icons. :)

In that case select no email notification and they should still show up in your subscription list.

nevermind

ahem - - sorry. i just checked my submissions list & found all my most recent posts included in the list. yeah! it's a shame i can't find all my previous posts! it would be nice to go back & visit the colorado thread - - - but i can't find it anymore!

i have one more tech ?? and one etiquette one:

tech - what is the significance of the little exclamation point on the bottom left of the screens of some people? I am sure it must mean something but I don't know what it is . . . and that leads me to the etiquette question - - if i see that someone is onilne (based on their profile in the thread) that i would like to ask a question to but the particular thread we are both posting to is a "game" thread (ie only 3 words or associations or chain games, etc) am i allowed to directly try to private message him/her?

i thought (i could swear i read it somewhere . . . ) that one should only pm someone if they have been invited to do so. in a situation where i can not ask within the thread if i can pm them is there an alternative?

sorry for all the questions - - i just want to make sure i don't break the house rules! i hear the penalties are severe. . . . then again, that may be ok too. :)

A lot of the etiquette regarding unsolicited PM's is aimed at men who randomly PM anything that appears to be female, hoping they'll get lucky. :)

Links and Images in sig.

Your Author Profile lists all your stories, if you right click on each link to your story and copy link address you can then add it to your sig as described in the above link.

Like so: Do You Understand?

Also if you quote this reply you can see the syntax used for links.

I'm not sure about the av, try reducing the kbs even more if you can or attach it to this thread and I'll have a look.

At the top of every forum page is a bar with links to various forum functions; Search is the third from the right.

When you click on Search, you get a text box and a link to "Advanced Search" (<- Clickable)

When you get to the advanced search page, highlight your username (from the welcome message in the upper right) and drag it into the righthand text box.

Hit enter (or set the search and display parameters to suit your taste) to get a list of every thread you've posted in, ordered with the most recently active first.

Search results are limited to 100 results, but that usually isn't a problem for most people looking for active threads.

You can find your posts and threads you've posted to by:
1) Find any one of your posts, like one in this thread
2) Click on your username, and you'll get a pop-out box.
3) Click on 'View denalirayne's profile' and you'll be taken to your profile.
4) Click on the 'Find all posts by...' or 'Find all threads started by...' link.

You'll also notice there's a 'Find more posts by...' option in the pop-out box from Step 2. If you just want to see your posts or which the last 100 threads you've posted to, you can click on that, and bypass the other two steps.

This procedure is good for getting background info on other members. When I get a PM from someone I'm not familiar with, or am just curious about a member, for instance, I'll look at their profile, then browse their posts and threads. It gives me a quick idea of who they are and/or what they might want; for example, I've noticed those who only post compliments or sexual remarks in AmPics and elsewhere are generally aiming to get in my cyberpanties with their unsolicited PMs.

The exclamation point icon is a link to report rule violations to the moderator of the forum the post is in. There's a link to the Forum Rules at the bottom of each page if you need to refresh your memory on what's (not) acceptable.

The 'View more posts by....' option can be helpful here, too, as it can help you confirm the questionable post is spam, or allow you to let the Mod know the post is by a terminal spammer, rather than just someone who's trying to slip some advertising in here and there, which can save them time.

As the FAQs Before Posting thread says, you're generally fine sending a RESPECTFUL unsolicited PM. "Nice tits, babe...do u want 2 cyber?" likely won't go over as well as "Hey, I saw your post in ______ thread, and liked what you said about ______ . Would you like to talk sometime?" with most members.

Damn! I knew there was a reason I had such a low batting average around here. ;)

Hmmm . . . I tried this (see my last post above) & when I tried to rename the link to the title of the story it took off the hyperlink function of the link.

I swear, I am normally not this helpless, I am just severely tech-challenged!

Thank you all for your help. Please hang in there just a little longer & I promise I will become an independent poster. Thank you!

gasp!

oh how funny! when i added my story link to my signature it suddenly put it in the signature of ALL my posts - - it's like it "back-dated" my edits as though it had been there the whole time!

gasp!

oh, this is fun!

ok, now can someone help me figure out how I can rename the link to read as the title of the story & not as the url of the story?

thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!

I'm not getting an error message, but the link's not doing anything for me, either.

Links to searches will time out after a certain period, so that's why it's not working for you most likely.

Copy the URL of your story, then hit the
createlink.gif
button at the top of the text box. Type the title in the box, hit OK, then paste the URL into the second box.

You also may want to find one of the "Test Your Posting Here" threads (searching instructions in the FAQs Before... thread) to play around with some of this stuff. My guess is you'll learn most quickly by going through the process of figuring it out. :)

I'd much rather Erika's cyberpanties over some tatty old e-knickers anyday. :p

Dena, it looks like you have most of your questions sorted out, have fun.
