Vanessa Leggett is still in jail.
On April 16th, 1997, Doris Angleton was found shot to death in her Houston home. Her husband Robert -- A former bookie -- and his brother Roger were charged with the murder. Police believed Robert hired his brother to ice the soon to be Ex-Mrs. Angleton.
Ms. Leggett -- an aspiring author with virtually no publication credits -- spoke to Roger Angleton in jail, shortly before the suspect committed suicide.
Prosecutors want those notes.
Ms. Leggett refuses to turn them over.
Until she does, she sits in jail.
A federal appeals court refused to free her.
It's a First Amendment issue, Ms. Leggett claims. Freedom of the Press is at stake.
But Ms. Leggett hasn't published a single word about the case. Nor does she have a contract, or an employer.
What she does have is evidence that could help solve a brutal murder.
As a law-abiding citizen, isn't she obligated to help the authorities in their investigation?
And is this about the First Amendment at all?
Ms. Leggett's crusade has made her famous, and has drawn powerful backers to her support.
It has also added a few zeroes to the end of whatever book deal she will eventually land.
Why, the cynic might think she might even write a book about her terrible ordeal and her heroic battle.
So I throw this out.
What's up with Vanessa Leggett.
Heroine, or self-promoter?
