Valentines Day Contest Support Thread 2025

How much of a wipe are we expecting? With almost 900 votes, I can't really see one doing much good though.

Mine has just flipped to New but it's apparently also Published:

I had that happened before, I think, and it has tomorrow's date on it, so I assume everything is fine...

Hard to know. I've been in comps where people reported a large number of votes getting swept, and I had zero.
I've pieces where I've gained a few tenths, and others where I've lost a little. I'm really not sure what they do.

The intent is to remove votes, both high and low, that the mystical algorithm determines are bogus. Don't ask how. It's like the KFC special seasoning. Everyone has an idea of what's in it, but exactly how is a secret.

Realistically, the average story should be 3.0 Very good stories, 4.0 and exceptional, 5.0.

I hope they don’t follow this. Right now, all mine are over 4.5. This way, I’d be at about 1.
I agree with you, I'm just saying statistically that's how it should be. But, there's more to it, should a story at 4.5 with 40 votes be ranked the same as a story at 4.5 with 400 votes? I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel here, just adding to the conversation.

Yes, because for both stories it's an average score, not a ranking.

Are they comparable to each other? There are too many other factors, like category, age of story, and so on.

A ranking isn't the same as a score, though. You can have an individual story score, but to rank them, you need a whole bunch of stories.

I had to do the same for Christmas. No shame in that
Yeah, but I'm still disappointed. The deadline really comes fast! I submitted chapter 1 of my new story. It'll be a multi-parter instead of a big story. At least I won't get people complaining about it being 31 pages. :p

I started a thread about this recently, looking at ranking stories by percentiles to understand how we're really going. It was a bit sobering for me to discover that the 4.5 score in many categories is only just above the median!
Those types of threads serve no purpose at all. You do not have access to the type of information to make useful statements.

The Christmas decorations are almost gone, and stores are being swathed in pink. Hearts, flowers, ribbons, and cherubs armed with bows and arrows (I never trusted those guys)

IT'S ALMOST TIME FOR THE VALENTINES DAY CONTEST!

You can begin submitting on (or before): January 10
The last day to submit is: February 6 at 11:59pm EST
Winners will be announced on: February 13 how sweet

Here's the rules:
  • All submissions must be stand-alone stories created for this contest theme.
  • We will allow authors who have won in our monthly contests within the last 6 months to win in this special contest. However, if you have won a prize in one of the last two special contests, you are not eligible to win in this one. (I'm still going to enter, just because I'm that romantic)
  • A story has only to accrue 25 votes to be eligible, rather than the 50 required for the monthly contest.
Author must copy and paste the phrase "VALENTINES DAY 2025" to the "Notes to Admin" field of the submission (quotes are not needed).

Again -- PLEASE do not forget to put the EXACT phrase "VALENTINES DAY 2025" IN THE "Notes to Admin" FIELD - NOT the description field or anywhere else.

Submissions must have a Valentine's Day theme: i.e. Cupid, soulmates lost and found, high quality chocolate gifting, etc. Be creative! Please don't just submit a normal story that just happens to contain red roses. That would not be in the spirit of the contest, and readers (aka voters) will likely punish you for your trickiness. (They really will) Give true romance a shot, believe me - it sells!

Bring your questions and comments here, we're all here to help each other!
Ah yes, the season of overpriced chocolates and tiny winged archers we definitely trust. Sounds like a fun contest, nothing like a little high stakes romance to get the creativity flowing. Good luck to everyone entering, and may your Cupid be kind.
