Using Libre in Word 2003 mode

I lost word 2003 when my computer died a couple of months ago and now I'm using Libre in the word 2003 mode, .doc extension.

Anybody aware of any formatting problems when they post?

I noticed a lot of problems converting Word docs over to Libre and have had to copy and paste the word doc to a new Libre doc to stop it from freezing up constantly. Especially since the auto save function doesn't seem to work properly in Libre.

I'm a little concerned. I've seen formatting problems wreck stories. :(

How do you get into "word 2003 mode?" I've used LibreOffice and OpenOffice exclusively for long time and have not heard of such a thing. Or do you just mean that you're saving the file as Word 2003 *.doc file?

What version of LibreOffice are you using?

I don't have problems with format when translating between Word files and LibreOffice files unless the formatting is complex -- imbedded images, long tables, and so forth. I work on an Ubuntu system, so there is a problem with compatibility with propriety fonts (Calibri, in particular), but that can be fixed by adding the metric-equivalent fonts to LibreOffice.

6.1.2.1 (x64)

In a new doc there is no problem except with the autosave. Doesn't seem to work properly. When I brought over a file with all my stories the word docs started freezing up and unless I manually saved them, I kept losing a lot of writing. Auto save wasn't catching anything new despite it going through the save process automatically but the new stuff wasn't saved.

Just text is all there is. Although one with pics behaved the same way.

There is an updated version of Libre but it's a manual install and I don't like frickin with stuff like that until they are confident enough to put it in a automatic upgrade.

I've been opening a new Libre Doc and pasting the word doc into it. That seems to cure the freeze part of the issue although I have no idea why.

I was just concerned because I don't want to submit a story that falls apart formatting wise.

You're using a more recent version than I have.

I don't experience the problems you're having. It sounds almost like it's running out of memory, but these days that doesn't happen very often.

The LibreOffice Community Support site might be helpful.

16 gigs ram. 1TB hard drive. Memory is not a problem but I suspected that also. But looking at task manager I'm not even a teensy bit into available resources.

I'll try the community but I was more interested in any experiences posting stories here.

Thanks for your responses.

Word 2003 adds a lot of formatting to anything you save.

Import it into Libre and then save as text with line breaks only. That will strip everything else out. Then Libre should act normal.

Were your word files saved in compatibility 1997-2003 mode to begin with or where they saved as .DOCX files?

I save all my stories in .DOC compatibility mode. Libre has never had a problem opening them so I could save them again.

I also "heard" that you have all your stories in a single word doc? Is that true? Or did I read it wrong?

If it's true, I bet you are running into a limit in Libre.

I would put Libre in compatibility mode, then do a paste of a single story and if it starts taking a long time, take a look at what's going on in Performance Monitor to see where the bottle neck is - CPU or DISK.

Saved in 97-2003 .doc format. Not sure where you heard I saved all my stories in one doc. With 80 or so of them kicking around that would be one hell of a document.

My computer failed and I used a flash drive to transfer all the stories over still saving them in the .doc 97-2003 compatibility. Once I started opening them up in Libre they started freezing on me. Starting from scratch in Libre that isn't a problem. It's just the converted ones.

but it made me wonder about posting them. The current story going up tonight was written entirely on Libre so it's just any unknown formatting problems from using an unknown (to me) piece of software.

I've also looked in the performance meter in task manager. With 16GB ram and 1TB HD a story barely scratches the resources on the computer.

Good. As for the format in Lit. It doesn't matter what format you save them in at home... unless you are attaching the file to the submission.

Personally, I copy and paste the text into the submission form. I do include some html tags for bold and italic and centering within the text.

I you would like me to take a look at one of those files that your system freezes on, drop me a PM. I'd be happy to help. I have Word 2007 and can update to the latest Libre version to see what might be going on for you.

When I first started I was told the word 2003 .doc was the preferred format for the system so that's what I've been using since. I use Bolds and Italics so I like to see the finished product before I post. My story got posted yesterday so I'm just waiting to see what the format comes out like. Copying the old stories over into a new Libre doc seems to fix the problem and the version I'm using is still considered beta so maybe it's something there.

I'll see if I can find an old story that won't embarrass me too much and pm you with it.
