The sad thing is, some lf them realize this. Unfortunately their ruling class is completely corrupt. It's cultural and deeply embedded. We see exactly the same descent into poverty, chaos and runs in black-run cities in the USA. Atlanta. Detroit. New Orleans. You name it. It's culture, and it's the same across every state in Africa. Wealthy countries like Nigeria, Ghana, the Congo. There are no exceptions - Botswana and Namibia are simply postpining the inevitable on the backs of the mining companies, and have small populations meaning they can hold off the decline and fall.

Case in point.....now Zim is trying to bring a few white farmers back. Trouble is, it will change nothing. Anyhow, this is where South Afrixa is going, slowly, unss th whites take over again. Which would be for the best.

LOL. See those areas with high pop densities. That strip up the east coast is where the Xhosa and Zulu live. That's also where most of the fertile land is, and the Xhosa and Zulu live on most of it. Pretty much subsistence farming rather than commercial. I've driven thru big parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the climate is what enables the high density population east of the Drakensberg.

Now THAT I didn't know (about Goring). The Bantu and the whites all hunted and killed the Khoisan, largely over cattle killing I believe. They moved into Khoisan hunting grounds and killed off the wild animals the Khoisan lived off, and when the Khoisan killed cattle or sheep instead, they hunted down and kiled the Khoisan. Same as in Australia with the aborigines. Usual conflict between farmer and hunter-gatherer societies. The Bantu had already elimimated the Khoisan thru most of central and eastern Africa - those in Namibia and South Africa were the remnants even then.

Not really. Once you've been in Africa and seen how it works, it's hard to close your eyes to the sad reality that that the underlying culture has everything to do with why most of Africa is a shithole.

I really recommend this book for a bit of historical insight.

The author, Stuart Cloete was born in France in 1897 to a Scottish mother and South African father. (His ancestors had come from Holland with Jan Van Riebeck to establish a settlement for the Dutch East India Company). At the age of 17 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant (at the beginning of the First World War in 1914) into the Ninth King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, before later transferring to the Coldstream Guards. While nearly all of his early fellow officers and friends died, he survived four years of fighting in France and, for a while, was treated like a living lucky charm by the troops. He was seriously injured twice, and experienced amnesia induced by ‘shell-shock' which was largely left untreated. After recuperating in France, Cloete became a successful farmer in the Transvaal in South Africa. Eventually he sold up and left for England to become an author. He recalled the decision to become a writer as the biggest gamble of his life. But, as it turned out, he hit the jackpot with his first novel, Turning Wheels, published in 1937. It sold more than two million copies, although it was banned in South Africa where it scandalized the authorities with its commentary on the Great Trek and a mixed-race relationship. Cloete was a prolific writer and went on to complete 14 novels and at least eight volumes of short stories.

"The African Giant" is the story of a year long trip he and his wife made through sub-Saharan Africa in the 50's, before the winds of change swept over Africa and while he European states still ruled all their African colonies. He extols the advantages that Africa has over other colonies, like the Asian ones. Education, the established infrastructure, the mineral and resource wealth, farming (Congo back then had karge cattle ranches and under the Belgians, had a comprehensive infrastructure and was a major exporter of agricultural products as well as the mines....). He saw a bright shining future for Africa, from notyh to south, with all the advantages that the continent had and has - and he regarded Africa as a sleeping giant which was beginning to awaken....

Alas, he was looking at it from a very euro-centric prespective and failed to make allowances for Africans.....anyhow, read the book and weep for what might have been....

Africans would have been a lot better off if they'd never gained their independance.....
