Underwire bras

I went shopping today for lingerie (no, not for me) and when it came to bras I found 95% of them are underwire. Ladies, is this out of necessity? Comfortability? Belief your too small? What? I like the natural look of a non-underwire bra but they are getting harder to find. Do you prefer wire or no wire?

They certainly aren't for comfort! Nor are they specifically for small breasts (for the purpose of enhancing appearance). In many cases, they are for women with larger breasts (or ones that tend to sag more on their own). They hurt like hell, especially once they've gotten old and the wire has a chance to poke through the fabric.

What Tiggs said -- they are really for support for larger breasted women.

There are a few models that are relatively comfortable, but when that wire goes -- one can only hope that it happens in the laundry and NOT while one is wearing it.

Found the best underwire bras at Lane Bryant but ladies they only start at a 36D so sowwy to the ladies with small tits!! its cotton and i have one in every color for every occasion and it doesnt poke!! YEA~~

36D and UP?!?!? YIKES!!! lol I'll stick with my "medium" (as Mackdaddy says) 38Cs.

If that is the case, then why do they dominate the market? Does it mean that the majority of women these days are large breasted? Not that I would complain of course;)

SUPPORT!!

Yep, I wouldn't subject myself to these wire contraptions if nature had been a little less generous! :) However, after breastfeeding two babies, gravity has exacted a heavy price and I need the damn things! The only trouble is finding them. When you live in a large metropolitan area, it's pretty easy to find specialty stores and whatnot (buying from a catalog may be fine for some, but not me) but living in small town, USA is an exercize in frustration. Do you know what it feels like to be told that the Victoria's Secret woman just doesn't have tits this big?

As the lone voice of dissention...

I never wear anything but. On a properly fitted bra (according to industry surveys, almost 80% of all women are wearing the wrong size bra) the wires are not noticable. As for being for large breasted women only, I am a 36C.

I do not like the way wireless bras make the breasts look. Unless yours are perfectly firm, they tend to take on an almost triangular shape due to the way the cup is attached to the band. The wire keeps the breast rounded.

I've found the bras at Victoria's Secret are great - I love the underwire bras they make - I've never had a problem with them - course being a 38D doesn't make it easy to find nice bras so I'm always thrilled cause they have such a great selection - even if it does mean a drive to Buffalo. When the hell are they gonna open up across the border.

You are not alone Kitten. Very few women get fitted properly. And jeez, it's free, it's not anywhere near like a mammogram (juss had my first for various reasons, much yikes) and does more than anything for a figure. I find that most women really don't even know how the sizes of a bra are determined. Gawd knows no men do!

I am a 34fullB and I wear, in order of frequency, a lace "nothing" kind of bra, an underwire, or nothing. Department store bras are that total triangle look. My older aunt tells my they used to iron their bras to get that rocket ship look. Boobs are pose to droop a lil right? Sure maybe too much after time. But come on guys? Not as bad as when you start to droop huh? Viagra city.

Have you checked La Senza Busty, it's almost the same as Victoria Secret and we have them in Canada. They have very nice bra's there. Same here 36D, so not easy to find some cute ones that don't cost you a arm. I love Chantelle's bra, but a panty and bra cost ya 150$, but I still got them after 3 years and still are in top shape and look good.

Sounds like a great excuse...

...to fly to London or Paris!

Not that I wear one, but let's say I do appreciate the results! Lots of lovely choices here!

Hey, I resemble that remark!

I do so know how to figure out a bra size. Hullo-Nurse was kind enough to answer my Bra Sizes thread on the how to forum. :p

Well there are other bra's that will do the same thing with out the wire... Gel... and some even come with the thin wire that is wrapped through out the bra to give safer support... sheesh when those underwire bras break, they can go right through the skin... I know my wife as had it happen to her.

I am a perky 34B, so I have, by no stretch, big tits. However, I love underwires. barring sports bras, I don't own a bra without them. I guess I like the discomfort. Maybe I'm weird. But the feeling of taking one off at the end of a long day is worth going the whole day with em.

I also have to object. I learned in college how to "size" a women's breast. My girlfriend at the time introduced me to buying lingerie and explained how to buy the correct type and size of bra.

I hear everyone mostly saying underwire is for support if you are big busted and that's fine. But when I shop for sexy non-underwire bras they are very hard to find. The girl at my Victoria's Secret told me I would have a bigger and better selection if I looked at the underwire ones. Again, wire seems to dominate.

Im with you on that one kitten. For some reason the non wire ones, make my breats look like projectile misiles. Not very attractive and very frightening. My underwires are very comfortable. And they do have a natural look. At least more so than the grandma pointy ones.

Underwires dominate the market because they do offer better support & I think they are prettier as a rule. I love pretty underwear, especially if I am wearing something very conservative on the outside. One problem that many women have is they wear the same size bra forever. In the last year, I have gone from a 36A to a 36 B. I am not sure why, because I have lost weight, but my sweetie isn't complaining. There are a lot of new materials being used for wires, it isn't just metal wires anymore. Underwires that are fitted properly shouldn't hurt. Most women should be fitted at least once a year to make sure they are wearing the correct size.
