Underage fans

Yesterday I received some feedback from an enthusiastic reader who, among other things, told me that he'd started a fan club for me.

At his high school.

For legal reasons, I'd like to point out that lots of high schoolers are eighteen years of age or older. Some are, anyway. At least a few.

I sent the young gentleman a friendly and innocuous thank-you, but now I can't stop thinking that my stuff is being read by readers of questionable age qualification, if you understand my meaning.

To be honest, it doesn't worry me too much. I'd like to think that my stories wouldn't promote or encourage any unhealthy attitudes toward sex among such readers, and that -- if anything -- they're responding to intelligence and sensuality, and that has to be a good thing.

Still, it caught me off-guard, I suppose. Anyone with a similar experience?

That's probably the wisest move, MathGirl. Almost as soon as I replied, I got another email from the same reader, asking how old I was when I started writing.

This reminds me of that scene in Sex And The City, where a woman who set young authors up with mentors, ask Carrie if she would like to be a mentor for a young writer, and Carrie says:
"I write about sex. Is that what these kids want to learn, how to write about giving a blowjob?"

Actually, I'm jealous. No youngsters have confessed their deep admiration for my work.
Though I think they would benefit from reading my stories. Sex ed in school is usually just about diseases and pregnancies and contraceptives. They could learn a lot about technique from reading my stories!

I think that it would be much more unhealthy for them to wait until they're 18 to start reading about sex. It's common knowledge that sex is pretty much the only thing in the minds of teenagers*. Think of what you're doing as a public service.

*I haven't been a teenager for almost three months. There's a whole lot of other things I can think of, now... like... ok, I can't think of anything right now, but you know what I mean.

Couldn't agree more, trying to restrict perfectly legal age young adults from enjoying the thrills of sexual entertainment is a crime, not the other way round, 16 is legal age to screw and marry here so why shouldn't they read and appreciate an erotic story or three.

16 is the legal age to have sex and marry here also. The ones who want to read erotica do even if they are not 18.

And I agree completely about not trying to keep teenagers from reading erotica. I think it's perfectly healthy. (Just like svenskaflicka, I read smut when I was young, and we've obviously both turned out to be model citizens, making a conscious effort to "give back" to the smut community.)

It still freaked me out, though, and I'm still going to follow MathGirl's example from now on.

And no... I didn't threaten to tell his mom. I didn't threaten to spank him, either, with or without his mom present. There a few thousand such stories easily available a few clicks away, though.

Absolutely! I think it's much better for a teen to read High Quality Smut than to watch porno movies. My best friend once dated a guy who tried to finger her butt, not because he was particularly interested in it himself, but because he had seen a guy do that in a porno movie, and so he assumed that ALL women simply LOVE it when a guy sticks a finger up their ass.

I posted a story on another site, and got feedback telling me how great it was to finally see a heroïne who was plump AND sexy. Apart from the freak films, have you ever seen a woman in a porno movie on whom you couldn't count the ribs?

I have two of them to share.

One is this guy who probably still has me on his buddy list - he sent me feedback and we exchanged for a while - he said it was creepy how much I looked like his friend who also had the nickname "chicklet" - we got to know each other and then he told me he was 15. I stopped talking to him, I was so creeped out, and I feel guilty for calling off a friendship but also for having my stuff read by a 15 yr old.

Another has to do with a lesbian/bisexual site for women, where women could get to know one another. I had a profile up there, and this girl contacted me. We talked for about an hour before she had to get it off her chest that she was only 16. I told her that I was going to email the webmaster, I *did* email the webmaster, he emailed me back and she was banned for life.

I used to discuss sex with this bunch of teens I hung out with a while back (when I was 25). Since teens are curious about sex, I think it's more healthy to give them all the information they need/want, instead of them trying to figure it out by themselves. A teenager who knows that you CAN get pregnant even if it was your first time, will use a condom.
