The president has an obligation and is well within the purview of the executive branch to investigate corruption before allowing millions of dollars to transfer hands. That's protecting US and american interest.

Secondly, he asked specifically about "Biden's son" by name: "The other thing, There's a lot of talk about Biden's son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great." It was not about rooting out corruption, it was about digging up dirt on Hunter Biden.
