Brie didn’t know when she happened to fall asleep. She was only aware that that the conversation between Madison and Bryson woke her. Sitting up and stretching, Brie spun around to look at her husband. She was admittedly surprised to see him tonight; she had expected that he would ditch her in favour of his ongoing projects and to see him home early was a miracle.
Then she caught up to Maddie’s words and her eyes widened, slowly trying to digest. Stay here? A few days? What was she...?
Oh.
Shit.
Maddie had casually dropped that tidbit during their talk on the phone a couple weeks ago - Brie had forgotten all about it. She had to try and soothe this over with Bryson, who had disappeared into the kitchen.
Standing, Brie stretched again. The dressing gown rose up over the curve of her bum and revealed a narrow strip of skin that showcased the markings from her rigorous sex with Jack. It was a long running joke between them that Bryson was too vanilla for anything other than boring missionary, and Brie watched the wheels turning in Maddie’s head. Yanking her covering back down, Brie turned her back to her sister and said “you know how clumsy I am. I wiped out on my run the other morning. Hurt like a bitch to clean that mess up. Anyway — give me a minute or two? Let me go make Bryson a snack.”
Madison’s eyes narrowed even more. It had also never been a secret that she didn’t like the way her sister waited on her older husband like a waitress and not a wife. Bryson was capable. Why couldn’t he make his own damn sandwich?

Brie stopped just inside the entrance to the kitchen. She watched Bryson quietly for a few moments and lowered her eyes to the floor as she began to speak. “I’m sorry Bryson. I forgot that she was coming, I swear I did. I was in the tub and next thing I know Maddie was already on the couch entertaining herself. You know I didn’t even plan to be here tonight—why would I stay at my parents if I knew my sister was coming to stay? I’m still here tonight because you asked me to work this out and I’m trying. Why don’t we say goodnight to Maddie and go for a little drive to try and talk this out?”
Brie’s offer was shaky and everyone within the sound of her voice could tell. Still, she had never been a quitter and giving up on her marriage without trying to fix it would be something she just couldn’t abide. Even earlier with the suggestion to stay at her parents, Brie had only intended to get away for a few days. She had never meant that she was leaving her husband permanently, but now, looking at the angered frown he was levelling her with, Brie realized that there might not be any working this out.
Bryson didn’t understand what he had done wrong. His slights of his wife were numerous. It didn’t mean Brie was innocent either; she had cheated on her husband a handful of times and actually enjoyed it. She was no angel. They both had work to do in order to to fix this, but Brie suspected the mountain of issues between them might be impassable.
Slowly, putting one foot forward and then the other, Brie closed in in her husband and pressed her cheek against his back.
“I’m so sorry Bryson. I missed you — welcome home. Why don’t you let me make you something to eat and then we’ll talk?”
