I know even though I was excited about my new job, the one I now hate, it was so hard to leave because I had been there for 8 years and had made so many friends. We all swore we were going to keep in touch, but as our lives were going in different directions and children to raise, etc.. none of us did. been thinking about all of them and keeping them in my prayers. I have a cousin and his family that live there. He left and went to my uncle's in Alabama before it hit. He is going back to help access the damage. My niece's husband went to NC when they had theirs and also for Frances. He came home last weekend. But he is back down there again and hopefully Ivan will give all the ppl in FL a break. They sure do need one.

Jenny - thinking of you as always, especially this weekend. Wish Oman could be there for you this weekend.

Hi everyone... just checking in!

Update:

The job is going great. I like the people I work with a lot and think I am going to love the work (child protective services/foster care).

I signed the lease to my townhouse today, and have the keys in hand. But, unforunately the move is going to have to wait until next weekend. I dont have renters insurance and dont want to risk moving all of our belongings there with Ivan looming around us. At least if it does hit and is devastating, it will all be covered under the home owner's insurance at the house. Needless to say, I am very disappointed and it is such a let down. But, I can be patient for a few more days. I can, I really can. (hush, Jeff.)

Only 4 1/2 weeks until I have a very special visitor. I can hardly wait.

This is officially the worst time of my life. After being without a job for 3 years I finally got one. I was driving a school bus and I was really happy. Not the fake happy that I was playing to most people but honestly happy. I had the man I love, great friends, and a job. That lasted about a week. There was a mechanical problem on the bus and the gas pedal stuck down and I got in an accident with a tree. It was completely not my fault but because I was within my probationary period they had to fire me. I was so depressed. Then I thought I had good friends but it turns out that they are all backstabbing assholes who wanna talk shit about me. My one "friend" is cheating on her husband and a few of us know. Yet she sticks her nose in shit that doesn't concern her and lies about shit. Then the girl who is supposed to be my best friend listens to her lies and believes them. Now she is pissed at me. I should be pissed at her and I am. So now it is me and Brian. At least I have him. We are going to be moving to Florida. We are staying with my mother until we get jobs and a house. I just need to get away from these people and start somewhere else. I don't need this shit in my life. Constantly wondering who is my real friend and getting depressed over all this shit. In the past 2 weeks I have contemplated suicide. Thank God for Brian. But I have resorted back to my cutting. Which is really bad. I haven't done it too bad but a few cuts. I feel bad about it now but then it felt soo good. I am back seeing my therapist. Maybe she can help me. All this right around the year anniversary of when my dad died. Well I didn't mean to bring everybody done. Please conitue with you normal conversation.

I got to come home for the weekend because Ill be gone for 2 weeks after this weekend ends! However,the great news is
I might get a week or two off to repay me for the extra time put in after that. The timing is great since it would coincide with the anniversary of jenny moving here.

Frances Survivor...

Checking in! Thank you all for prayers for all of us in Florida.

We've just got power restored, it's been out since last Friday at 10:30am. That's like 8 freakin' days with NO power, NO fans even, NO ice, NO fuel to speak of, NO hot water. Thank goodness I stocked up on canned goods and bottled water. Our community water had possibly been compromised so we were on boil orders until yesterday. We came home late last night to discover that most of the neighborhood had restored power except the few houses on our small block. I couldn't help it, I had gotten my hopes up as we drove the streets, lights on all over closer and closer to home...when we pulled in the driveway to darkness, I cried a little. Sigh...I tried not to, but I couldn't help the frustration and exhaustion was just too much to hold back anymore. Plus the power company had updated the recorded message of the forecasted restoration date for our service to extend it by two more days. The recording at this time said not until 9/17!!! But, around 1:30am this morning a power truck cruised past looking around and around 9am they were working on our block. Apparently a lot of down lines and fried transformers and such so these homes needed lots of work.

It's been beyond hotter than hell...and all sorts of difficulty, but we made it through. I've never been so happy to feel A/C. Danny had to sleep in the truck the last few nights...Our fence and screening around the pool blow down. I could go on and on but right now I'm just so grateful and relieved to be able to return to some form of normalcy I don't have the energy to bitch. (I know, too late!)

I have pictures, tons of them...some before, some after, some during the hurricane that I will load in the next day or two and post a link here for anyone that wants to see.

I've prayed for all our Florida dwellers and see that it looks like most have checked in and also faired ok. Now, as for Ivan...this one really looks bad. Is anyone here still in the current path? IL, Sunnygirl, Winzy?? I pray not.



Babydoll, my gosh, it's been forever since you and I have posted near each other. But, this recent one really concerned me! I wish I could just reach out and give you a big ol hug. I've known times as you've described...where everything in life seems wrong. It can be so overwhelming. I hope that your therapist is able to help you with utilizing what sounds like a coping tool that you have overcome before. All I can add is, there are times in a person's life that a cleansing is needed to wash away the stagnant areas. Maybe this move to Florida (please wait til after hurricane season! ), is exactly what will give that to you. Do you know yet what part of Florida you will be moving to? Maybe we'll be nearby?! Let me know, k? *hugs*

To: ex-Floridians, present Floridians, and future Floridians.

We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season. Any day now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob out in the Gulf of Mexico and making two basic meteorological points:

(1) There is no need to panic. (2) We could all be killed.

Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida. If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one.''

Based on our experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1. Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.

STEP 2. Put these supplies into your car.

STEP 3. Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween.

Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in Florida.

We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:

HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE: If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance.

Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements:

(1) It is reasonably well-built, and (2) It is located in Nebraska.

Unfortunately, if your home is located in South Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place.

So you'll have to scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss.

Since Hurricane Andrew, I have had an estimated 27 different home-insurance companies. This week, I'm covered by the Bob and Big Stan Insurance Company, under a policy which states that, in addition to my premium, Bob and Big Stan are entitled, on demand, to my kidneys.

SHUTTERS: Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, all the doors, and -- if it's a major hurricane -- all the toilets. There are several types of shutters, with advantages and disadvantages:

Plywood shutters: The advantage is that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap. The disadvantage is that, because you make them yourself, they will fall off.

Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these work well, once you Get them all up. The disadvantage is that once you get them all up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps, and it will be December.

Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage is that you will have to sell your house to pay for them.

"Hurricane-proof'' windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection: They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane winds! You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska.

"Hurricane Proofing Your Property: As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc.; you should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you don't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately). Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles.

EVACUATION ROUTE: If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's license; if it says "Florida" you live in a low-lying area.) The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

HURRICANE SUPPLIES: If you don't evacuate, you will need a mess of supplies. Do not buy them now! Florida tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last can of SPAM.

In addition to food and water, you will need the following supplies:

23 flashlights. At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes out, to be the wrong size for the flashlights.

Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what The bleach is for. But it's traditional, so GET some!)

A 55-gallon drum of underarm deodorant.

A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a
hurricane, but it looks cool.)

A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators. (Ask anybody who went through Andrew; after the hurricane, there WILL be irate alligators.)

$35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you can buy a generator from a man with no discernible teeth.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay away from the ocean.

I was lucky enough to have no damage to my house 90% of the trees in my neighborhood are destroyed.

RETIRE AT THE HOLIDAY INN

No Nursing Home for Me! I'm Checking into the Holiday Inn.

With the average cost for a nursing home per day reaching $188.00, there is a better way when we get old and feeble. I have already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long-term stay discount and senior discount, it is $49.23 per night.

That leaves $138.77 a day for:
1. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner in any restaurant I want, or room service.
2. Laundry, gratuities, and special TV movies.

Plus, they provide a swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge, washer, dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. They treat you like a customer, not a patient. $5.00 worth of tips a day will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.

There is a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride free. The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp.)

To meet other nice people, call a church bus on Sundays.

For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up.

It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today. And you are not stuck in one place forever, you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii? They have a Holiday Inn there, too.

TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No Problem. They fix everything and apologize for the inconvenience.

The Inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks if you are OK. If not, they will call the undertaker or an ambulance. If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.

And no worries about visits from family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation. The grandkids can use the pool. What more can you ask for?

So, when I reach the golden age I'll face it with a grin, just forward all my emails to the Holiday Inn!

(Upon telling this story at a dinner with friends and too much red wine, we came up with even more benefits the Holiday Inn provides to retirees.)

Most standard rooms have coffee makers, reclining chairs, and satellite TV--all you need to enjoy a cozy afternoon. After a movie and a good nap, you can check on your children (free local phone calls), then take a stroll to the lounge or restaurant where you meet new and exotic people every day. Many Holiday Inns even feature live entertainment on the weekends.

Often they have special offers, too, like the Kids Eat Free Program. You can invite your grandkids over after school to have a free dinner with you. Just tell them not to bring more than three friends.

Pick a Holiday Inn where they allow pets, and your best friend can keep you company as well.

If you want to travel, but are a bit skittish about unfamiliar surroundings, in a Holiday Inn you'll always feel at home because wherever you go, the rooms all look the same.

And if you're getting a little absent-minded in your old days, you never have to worry about not finding your room--your electronic key fits only one door and the helpful bellman or desk clerk is on duty 24/7 .

Being perma-skeptics, we called a Holiday Inn to check this story out--and are happy to report that they were positively giddy at the idea of us checking in for a year or more. They even offered to negotiate the rate (We could have easily knocked them down to $40 a night! ).
