One Piece fans were laughing after the debate because Donald Trump managed to accidentally recapitulate a major plot point from the Impel Down arc.

The rebel leader Ivankov runs a secret gender reassignment clinic in the undersea prison Impel Down, and uses his hormone powers to swap pirates’ genders and leads them as they throw fabulous dance parties.

Who knew DonOld was a fan…

😳

Since I’ll use any excuse to talk about anime, One Piece is surprising progressive for a manga series from the 90’s. While it started with female characters that were entirely fan-serv, its creator has since been aggressively broadening his female character designs away from his early Barbie dolls.

Sympathetic queer representation in One Piece showed up early. At first Bon Clay in his tutu seems like a joke, but when he sacrifices himself so Luffy can escape Impel Down it’s a genuinely poignant moment.

When the straw hat pirates got to Wano, the gender lines got really fuzzy. There’s one major character who looks like a sexy girl, but acts like a boy and everybody treats him like a boy. It’s played as totally normal. The only weird thing about him is his power to turn into a magical dog.

Awww, and you were doing soooo well about this, too!
It's okay, it's only a bump in the road and the road to anime recovery has speed bumps and pot holes. Tomorrow you can start all over fresh with a new streak.

Wtf are you talking about? :)
One Piece is a popular manga that’s been running since the late 90’s. It’s spawned both an anime series and a live action series that’s currently running on Netflix as well as several animated movies.

The series involves a group of pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy. At first they were just searching for the legendary “One Piece” treasure, but over the years they’ve gotten swept up into the world revolution against the Celestial Dragons—a group of heredity aristocrats with particularly punchable faces.

Luffy’s crew consists of:
  • Nami — the navigator
  • Zoro — the swordsman
  • Usopp — the sniper
  • Sanji — the cook
  • Tony Tony Chopper — the doctor
  • Robin — the archeologist
  • Franky — the cyborg shipwright
  • Brook — the skeleton musician
  • Jinbei — the fishman helmsman
You should totally check it out! The live-action Netflix series is available now and is very accessible to newbies.

The live-action series doesn’t make it to the secret gender-reassignment clinic in the underwater prison. That didn’t appear until about issue #500 in the manga.

You lefties sure love your cartoons. Anything other than reality. :)

One Piece started out as escapist fluff, but now it’s about freedom fighters overthrowing a corrupt aristocracy. The marines propping up the Celestial Dragons are starting to question whether they’re actually the good guys, and as I mentioned in the OP, One Piece has a bunch of subversive gender messages.

It tells its fans it’s cool to be trans.

Is it really cool, or is it just something, like for everyone, to be dealt with? The majority of people out there could care less about gender "confusion." It's just the soup of the day. :)

Unless you're trans yourself, there's nothing to be "dealt with". Just treat people normally.

Are they asking to be treated normally because it doesn't seem that way. Treating a man with a cock and balls as a woman is not normal, at least to me. There are many various forms of actual genital variations that up until a few years ago were viewed as birth defects. :)

No one except you cares.

Do you normally ask strangers about their genitals?

You're the one talking about it, Brightcreepygirl. List your pronouns. :)
This thread is about One Piece and how for years it’s promoted a positive attitude toward trans people. The episode about the secret gender transition clinic in a prison first ran over a decade ago.

And here I thought it was about dense, walkable utopian cities where the homeless are shuffled off and fruits and vegetables fall from the skies. :)

One Piece has addressed homelessness as well, and all its cities are dense and walkable, from Logetown to Water Seven and Whole Cake Island.

When we first meet Sanji at the restaurant where he works, he insists on giving free food to a starving begger. His own history of abuse and deprivation makes him acutely sensitive to helping other people in trouble.

As far as I'm concerned, any adults that want trans surgeries should be free to do so. I simply draw a line against a single penny of tax payer money being used for it.

Here is what Harris said:

"I support policies ensuring that federal prisoners and detainees are able to obtain medically necessary care for gender transition, including surgical care, while incarcerated or detained," Harris wrote in the questionnaire. She also checked a box "Yes" in response to whether she would use her executive authority as president to ensure transgender inmates, "including those in prison and immigration detention," can receive transgender surgery.
