There are reports of people wanting to keep pieces of whatever explosion parts/human remains they can find as souvenirs. To me that is as bad as grave robbing. What makes a person think that that is a valuable souvenir?

I don't know maybe just a morbid fascination. They actually had ads on Ebay for parts of the shuttle yesterday. Ebay took them off and authorities are investigating, some people are either sick or just plain dumb.

Removing evidence...

From a federal investigation scene is a $250,000 fine, and 10 years in prison. I heard NASA say they will prosecute to the full extent to any theft of material. I don't know about the statutory length, like what if 5 years from now, someone finds a chunk.....

Not just the fact of "stealing" evidence...but what about the toxic chemical exposure? Are people really stupid enough to think that they won't be exposed?

Yes, people really are that stupid.

I'm glad Ebay took it off. Profitting from tragedy such as that is probably one of the lowest things someone can do.

I'm sure there is something on the Shuttle that could fuck you up, but tiles and bolt and such ... I don't buy it. When they were saying that stuff about the volitile fuel hanging in the air around a little piece of tile, I didn't buy it. They just wanted to keep as many people as possible from screwing up the evidence.

How is this different than having a Titanic deck chair, or a Nazi helmet, an Egyptian mummy, a Norse broadsword tip or a piece of lava from Mt Etna?

People collect all kinds of things.

It's just plain old totemism.

Your comparisons do not quite coincide with an ongoing accident investigation. Collecting things is one thing, interfering with the investigation of a tragedy quite another.

I was answering the original post in this thread, which asked about *souvenirs*:

Agreed...If it's illegal to do so, people shouldn't be picking up bits of Columbia.

That being said, totemism makes people pick things up anyway.

Not saying it's right, or anything, but had the shuttle exploded over sea, and some sailor found a piece floating out in international waters, according to Salvage laws, it's theirs.
I realize it's a moot point, seeing how it didn't explode over the ocean, but I had to explain that to my parents this morning. I can't remember HOW the subject came up.

After the battle of Gettysburg the towns folk made a killing selling the bullet that killed little Johnny to families who could not hope to recover the bodies. See. There were bullets all over the town and in the fields around it. They also had tons of dead Union Soldiers. Nice match, even if it was completely fraudulent. Human beings are a greedy bunch in general and ought to be avoided at all costs. Thats why the sex toy industry is thriving. People are beginning to wake up to the horror of humaness.

I understand your point...but I still call it graverobbing.
