I would like to predict a fourth, Thompson in South Carolina and a fifth, Guiliani in Florida, but I have doubts.

Democrats don't matter, choice between bad, badder and worst, all raise taxes and bigger government.

Such a deal!

Amicus....

Nope...want Thompson on one side...doesn't matter on the other, not one complete brain between all of them.

Welcome, Virgin!

I appreciate that this was intended to be your usual gratuitous partisan insult and therefore hardly deserving of a response.... but you actually have inadvertently raised an interesting question....

Setting aside any and all disagreements you may have with their specific views on issues, I am curious how you would rank the leading candidates on the basis of intelligence.... And intelligence in the conventional "measurable" sense.... again regardless of whether you would agree with their conclusions on any or all issues.....

Just curious....

As a resident of NC I promise Edwards will lose this state. He was elected to the Senate here in 98 and missed close to 60% of the votes during his term. He thought he got elected Presidential candidate. When he was an Ambulance chaser his big thing was malpractice, big cases for large amounts. What he accomplished (besides inflating his bank account) was to get the insurance rates so high that we now have 10% fewer Doctors.

Okay, KC, I'll bite, but with a stipulation, if you don't mind.

I am partisan, of course, very much so, and in an insulting manner also. That is because I find the political philosophy of the Left to be despicable and beneath contempt.

The direction of the modern left, similar to Fascists and Socialists of the past, is a continual degradation of human individual rights in sacrifice to some sanctimonious greater good, be it saving the whales, the environment or mandating socialized medicine; always the use of force and restrictive legislation confining the human spirit. I truly, truly hate the ground they walk on.

That being said and from the limited point of view of watching and listening as the election process proceeds...I would guess that Barack Obama displays the highest intellect of the enire field on both sides.

Being smart and intelligent does not a whole person, or a whole brain make and Obama occupies the far left wing of the Democrat Party. And his racial and religious zeal color his intellect as well.

Clinton is a 'smart woman', specialized in politics and concensus making and will vacillate positions to satisfy the moment, clever and resourceful, she is also crafty and devious and I would not trust her with milk money.

Edwards is another politician, cum ambulance chaser, crafty and clever and malleable with the ebb and flow of pubic opinion and polls.

Romney tops those who might be called intellectual on the otherside, but again, is a life long politician and pretty boy, changing positions and philosophies as the occasion calls for'

McCain is a seventy year old war hero who did his bit and adopted the Reagan rhetoric without understanding the roots of that conservative movement that began with Goldwater in the modern age.

Huckabee is a competent governor, also a politician who works well the art of compromise in management procedures, has a strong faith which gives him strength of purpose and righteousness, but the concept of thinking is not on his agenda.

Thompson is a gentle giant, woven of the Reagan cloth also, but also a more talented and resourceful man. I like him for several reasons, not the least of which is that he is is still a lover and a romantic at 60 years of age with a new young wife and small children.

See...there is hope out there somewhere!

Cheers....Amicus...

The last I heard, Thompson is running a poor fourth in the polls in SC. Guiliani in FL is a decent bet. He may not win but he will be close.

Huckleberry would be a disaster, the American Christian equivalent of the Taliban. Did you hear his speech where he was advocating amending the Constitution so it was more in line with the Bible? That's HIS version of the Bible, by the way.

That is my perception also, Box...I would like Thompson to surge in SC, and in this election, it appears anything can happen and the polls have already been grossly in error once.

And I have not done a breakdown on the 22 states that will vote on Feb. 5th, difficult to predict, but some pundits are already counting delegates and the possiblity of an open convention is more possible now than it has been in decades.

It has been entertaining though, eh?

Thanks... Setting aside all the b/s, I think I would not disagree with the "rankings" per se... other than Thompson... who does not strike me as particularly clever.. whatever attributes he may or may not have is reminiscent of the R.R..... even remembers his lines, at least in the final cuts we see.... but then Ronnie was not an intellectual giant either. Of course, Ron's illness over the later years of his Presidency didn't help that reputation.

Curious........

I've been keeping up with the race thus far, thanks to the admittedly conservative bent of the AM radio station I listen to.

Huckabee, McCain, and Romney. Obama and Clinton. Thompson may take SC, and Giulianni Florida. The Republicans have a big brouhaha to deal with before they select their candidate. The Democrats, despite the abundant mud-slinging and back-stabbing, are going to have to chose between Hillary and Barack. Edwards will never get the nomination.

As for the Reps, I see it coming down to a contest of wills between Romney and McCain. Thompson and Giulianni will both make a good show of themselves, but the way they compromised themselves by concentrating on 'big' states will end up hurting them.

It's probably early, but I see an Obama/Romney race. Huckabee's religious slant will polarize a fair amount of the voting base against him, especially the younger voters, and he'll be ousted. Hillary, despite her dramatic and cunning 'emotional escapade,' will turn off voters with her rhetoric (and that of hubby Bill).

Just my view . . . ;)

Appreciate 'your view', Slyc....mine is somewhat different.

I think the nastiness that is going to develope between Clinton and Obama will eliminate both as serious candidates and then the Dems really have a problem.

I also disagree that the 'big state emphasis' of Guiliani and Thompson will be harmful. I think it was a clever move as the other candidates were exposed to the heat early and some have already faltered. I see Thompson and Rudy as emerging very strong after Feb. 5th.

As iou said....just my view...

You never know. I've been listening to Glenn Beck, and he thinks much the same as you. In fact, Thompson and Giulianni might very well prove to have found some genious insight into the art of manipulating voters. Personally, I don't think so, but I won't sulk if I'm wrong.

I think, with the recent caucuses, there are two fairly recognizable trends: The democrats are divided between Hillary and Obama, who both share some of the same views and ideas (granted, if such can be said about Hillary), whereas the republicans seem more scattered. Nearly all their candidates share the same basics: continuing the war on terrorism, keeping at least some troops in Iraq, maintaining the Bush tax cuts. At the same time, though, there seems to be a lot of fracturing.

If Thompson wins SC, and Giulliani Florida, the Reps will have five candidates to choose from. And the Dems will still have just Hillary and Obama. The basic voting nature of the American public, regarding the last thirty years, is against the Republicans. They need a very strong candidate.

I would like to predict a fourth, Thompson in South Carolina and a fifth, Guiliani in Florida, but I have doubts.
If anything it would keep the news networks in a state of utter confusion, when they can't pitch an easy mano e mano (or womano as it might be) battle soon. So I'm all for it. Let the bastards work for their salaries.

The most intelligent of the Dems was Richardson, but he's out.

McCain has wisdom and experience, which ain't smarts, but may be better.

Thompson and Kucinich get my vote at this point in the race, though. Not for intellect, but because they have the hottest wives.

Obama over McCain for the Presidency.

Thompson and Giuliani are done at this point. Huckabee's longevity is a testament that social conservatives don't trust Romney. Huckabee will win South Carolina. Romney might be able to build on his Michigan win, especially if he takes Florida.

Edwards will basically be done before Super Tuesday, uniting the "Anyone but Hillary" vote behind Obama.

The Presidential election will be a cakewalk for the Dems no matter what. People want change right now, and there's no republican that can unite the social and economic conservatives.

The most intelligent of the Dems was Richardson, but he's out.

As someone who has known Richardson for 25+ years, that isn't saying much! Never believed him because I couldn't trust him. Standard professional politician, if his lips are moving, he is telling a lie.

I wish the voters would revolt and only vote for people who have actually had real jobs and done productive work. That would exclude all lawyers.

How does a twerp like Kucinich rate a hot wife?

Make their college records public too. If they have majored in Poli Sci, make them ineligible.

You don't seem to be much of a prognosticator. Thompson came in fourth or fifth, and Rudy came in a poor third. Both threw in the towel shortly afterward.

Yep, bumping this thread up gave me a good laugh for the day.
