I have had the tympanitis on my left ear since childhood, it was a kind of chronic disease, it caused ongoing infection inside my left ear, especially during the past one and half year. I had seen a lot of doctors, tried a lot of anti-infection drugs, but didn¡¯t work. I guessed the bacteria had got the drug resistance.
I underwent a CAT scan in September 10 at the Third Affiliated Hospital Sun Yet-Sen University, and saw a medical professor named Zhang Guan-ping in September 14. She is an otic-expert. I was diagnosed with the chronic tympanitis A.S. And she said there was tumor inside my left ear, she suggested I have a surgery on my ear to remove the tumor. But she said there was possibility that the surgery may damage the nerves around the ear, which maybe caused the control problem of my face.
I checked in to the ENT department of the hospital in September 20. it would take two day to prepare my ear operation, had the checkup, I mean.
The patients in the ENT department are usually as same as normal people before the operations. A guy in my room just stayed in hospital at daytime, and then went to hotel at night.
Just like a factory, the hospital is also a assembly line, the patients are the products on the line. All the departments cooperate together according to a kind of system.
The employees are divided into classes: the upper class is the doctors, the middle class is the nurses, and the lower class is the assistant workers. The doctors are also divided into classes, the professors just do some important work. The lower position an employee is in, the harder his/her work would be.
I read English book on the bed, I knew I couldn¡¯t study during the few days after operation.
Doctor Li, the assistant of Professor Zhang, explained the risks of the operation, and let me sign the relating document.
I had a big meal at the night before the operation.
September 22, the day of operation.
I got up at a little after six, a nurse informed me and another patient having operation the same day to put so-called ¡°catheters¡±.
Catheter? I wasn¡¯t sure what it was, but I knew I would be in trouble.
After shower, the nurse led me the treatment room, she let me lie on the bed and take off my pants.
Oh! My God. I was so embarrassed to do so. It was absolutely nothing to do with sex even the nurse was a very young and beautiful girl.
But the nurse didn¡¯t care, for her, the patients are only a kind of creature. She probably was a virgin, I guess.
She told me I would feel a little uncomfortable while she penetrated the catheter into my urethra.
It was hurt. And I didn¡¯t dare see what the catheter was like.
Suddenly, I felt the catheter get into my bladder, and I can¡¯t help peeing, and then peeing a little by little.
It was really really uncomfortable, I even couldn¡¯t describe such feeling in any kind of languages. You could never imagine the feeling if you hadn¡¯t experience it.
I came back to the ward, the operation was scheduled from 8 o¡¯clock. I had to wait for one hour, I could bear it for a hour!
The guy beside my bed was talk with others, he said the nurses weren¡¯t shy when he flirted with them.
Shy? I was very angry: stupid guy! The nurse would be shy???
My wife came to the ward at half past seven, I handed my wallet and cell phone to her, I even didn¡¯t want to talk.
At 8 o¡¯clock, someone led me to the operation room.
The operation room looked good, I guessed the walls were also made in the factory, then assembled there.
The people of the anesthesia department were coming first. The surgery was done using a general anesthetic.
I know nothing after that¡_
My wife told me later I was carted away from the operation room at about 12:15.
Waiting in front of the room for several hours, my wife found that was as long as several years. A child was having operation in the meantime, his mother cried; my wife was touched to tears also.
My wife said I was conscious at that time: could answer questions correctly, but I didn¡¯t remember. It seemed that the mind could be divided into few levels.
At about 1:00pm, I awoke from coma. I felt confusing totally. It seemed I was thinking about something in English, but all the words are quite long and very strange.
It already paid me to work on English learning for these years: English became my mother language!
I tried to twinkle my eyes and opened my mouth: no problem. Then I tried to spell some English words, correct! So, I could say the operation didn¡¯t harm my nerves.
I held my wife¡¯s hand firmly.
Felt no pain, I also thought I was just to the catheter. Actually, the anesthetic still worked then.
I couldn¡¯t speak, I gestured to my wife for the ball pen and paper. I wrote on the paper: ¡°doctor¡¯s orders?¡±
She wrote: ¡°doctor told that you must lie on the bed for 72 hours, and you can¡¯t move your head!¡±
I wrote: ¡°you can speak!¡±
My wife thought about it for few seconds, and then understood what I meant, she spoke what she wrote again.
I wrote: ¡°stupid!¡±
I couldn¡¯t imagine how I could lie on the bed in the same position for 72 hours, I believed the normal people would be drove to crazy if he/she was forced to do like that for even only 24 hours.
IV on my right foot, the catheter in my penis, the bandage on my head, I could only move few pieces of my muscles. I couldn¡¯t stand it any more!
My wife fed me with water, porridge, and milk after 7:00pm. I couldn¡¯t eat anything else, because the muscles around the cut would be involved if I chewed the food, then it would harm the cut.
I couldn¡¯t sleep well, few second in nightmare, few seconds in conscious: it never could happen to normal people!
September 23, first day after the surgery.
I couldn¡¯t stand the catheter any more, I asked the nurse to pull it away for me when she showed up about 6:00 in the morning.
Her answer was a firm no: it was only the doctor in-charge who could make such decisions.
One hour with the catheter was even longer than one year!
Compared to the patients with leukemia, we were much luckier: they had to have pierce in their spines; also chemotherapy, radiation treatment, those were much more unbearable.
I though about the real meaning of our lives: how happy it would be to walk around! I would never be jealous of the deluxe cars or fancy girls other guys have. Healthy is priceless!
There are tens of thousand of pains in the world which can¡¯t be described by any languages. We only got the chance to experience few of them.
After 8:00, the doctors inspected the wards.
Professor Zhang approached my bed, I could only watch upward, so she bent over and told me, ¡°the surgery went very smoothly yesterday, take it easy, young man!¡±
In spite of the pains, I said, ¡°thank you very much! Professor Zhang.¡±
The words she spoke were music to my ears, her smile was the most beautiful one in the world: I believed I was seeing God!
I am an atheist: there was no God in the world. However I think God was the kindness of humans.
Professor Zhang isn¡¯t God, she is a normal person, but at that moment, I was seeing God around her.
Professor Zhang told the nurse to pull the catheter away for me. I still felt uncomfortable for some time after the catheter was pulled, it was another kind of uncomfortable, couldn¡¯t be described either. My urethra was hurt, and I couldn¡¯t pee normally for a whole day, also it seemed that my bladder couldn¡¯t work well for a few days.
Anyway, I could move my feet a little bit.
Of course, I must pee and poo on the bed with the assistance of my wife.
Till now, I¡¯m still sick of the word of catheter.
My eyes suddenly swelled with drugs because of constant drugs taking, it hurt my eyeballs. I felt upset, anxious, and mind confusion because of the general anesthetic.
My wife comforted me: one third of the 72 hours past by till 12:30!
My head was very heavy, I had to move it a little with my hands, my body also had to move a little by a little to change the position. I even didn¡¯t know if I was awake or asleep. Minute by minute, hour by hour, time past by very slowly¡_
September 24, two days after the surgery.
Got more energy today.
My urethra felt very hurt, the cut of the surgery felt a little hurt. The cut was behind my left ear, about 5-6 centimeters long. My head was very heavy as well, the bandage on my head was very tired.
The pain of our humans could be divided into several levels: the bigger one could cover the smaller one.
I didn¡¯t feel any uncomfortable even I hadn¡¯t took shower for 2-3 days.
When we are upset about something, it means that there is no anything bigger covering it.
Professor Zhang let an intern unfastened the bandage for me, the intern seemed not so experienced, but good! It unburdened me a lot.
The surgery usually causes the ringing in the ear, it¡¯s normal. the ringing wasn¡¯t too loud in the beginning, there are some noise which seemed from the two operation knives bumping into each other. But today it was very strong, I felt dizzy and sick.
My wife mashed some banana inside a disposable cup then fed me, it tasted just good. I called it banana paste.
September 25, the third day after the surgery.
I felt better today.
A cleaner told us that I must stay on the bed for a while before getting up, it would be a very difficult for me to walk after lying on the bed for 3 whole days.
I could change the position of my body a little more: I could lie on my right side, and the nurse put the IV on my hand, so I could roll my legs, it made the last day on the bed not so hard.
But my digestive system became disorder because I didn¡¯t have meals normally after the surgery. So the liquids inside my stomach lost balance.
I tried to sit up by myself, but I felt very dizzy.
After 1:00pm, my wife woke up from nap, she helped me sitting up for a while, I did some exercise on the bed, and then I got up with the supporting of my wife.
I had been on the bed for more than 73 hours!
I was very happy that I could walk!
After supper, my wife helped me taking shower, then I let her go home, our son missed her very much, he hadn¡¯t seen his mom for 3 days.
My wife worried about me, I told her it was no problem, I could go to washing room by myself, and I could drink water by myself.
I also brushed my teeth!
September 26, the forth day after the surgery.
Got a sound sleep last night, I felt good after getting up in the morning.
After having breakfast, my wife took our son and my sister to the hospital to see me.
We took a walk in the hospital, found some people were playing aerobics, a woman coached them. My wife joined them.
Outside the playground, the beautiful music in the air, I was in the seventh heaven: this was just our lives; this was exactly the lives which a lot of people dreamed of.
The operation strengthen my healthy ideas, healthy is priceless!
I¡¯d love to remind you to protect your ears: don¡¯t dig your ears, throw away the ear sticks. Remember: the wax can protect your ears.
I could eat as normal, I asked the nurses to reduce the drugs for me. They disagree, of course, and then maybe got the instruction from the doctor, they reduced one bottle for me.
I let my family members go home, I could live independently now.
September 27 to 29.
Only being put one bottle of drugs by IV each day.
For better recovery, besides milk and fruits, I had five meals a day, I felt so bloated, fortunately, I gained the weight I lost for the surgery.
Tried to read some book, found that I couldn¡¯t concentrate, and my brain worked very slowly. Anyway, I must do some brain exercise.
The surgery was not a big deal for me, but the side effect of the general anesthetic was very serious for me. It would take me quite long time to recover from the damage.
Professor Zhang tested my left ear with the tuning fork, it seemed that everything was fine. I believed my hearing could be better after this surgery.
I checked out from the hospital on September 29.
The total cost was CNY 9 thousands and some, the Social Security paid 4 thousands and some. I didn¡¯t tip the doctors, they didn¡¯t hinted me about that, actually, I liked to give few bags to Professor Zhang as a token of my gratitude after the surgery, but got no chances.
Wrapped with gauze on my left ear, I waved for the taxi on front of the hospital, the first taxi driver gestured for no then went away.
What? I was very disappointed: are there any kinds of wound could be infectious? Any infectious diseases are attached on the wound?
The second driver didn¡¯t say no, but seemed he was unwilling, so I chose the back seat.
My doctor suggested me having rest for half month, and go back to the hospital for recheck once a week in one month after checkout.
I felt better and better day-by-day.
I can sleep, can walk, can play with my baby, can do a lot of thing I want, I feel very happy¡_
I underwent a CAT scan in September 10 at the Third Affiliated Hospital Sun Yet-Sen University, and saw a medical professor named Zhang Guan-ping in September 14. She is an otic-expert.
