OMG - I have GOT to find a way to log on to this board while I'm at work! What I miss when I'm gone - Holy Crap!!!
As someone mentioned earlier, there is a difference between talking about unity within a race and separatist bullcrap; Malcolm X, Al Sharpton - they need their butts kicked. Tavis Smiley isn't in that same category. As a race, if black people want changes made, we have to become unified. I believe this is the message Tavis is trying to get across.
This topic is talking about racism between different races but black people are prejudiced amongst themselves. Someone's too black, too white, too something; we won't even talk about the number of ways you can 'act white' in Black America. How can we expect White America to look beyond color when we can't get past that ourselves? Someone like CH, depending on where he was raised, would be ostracized by dark and brown skinned black people, not accepted by white people and forced to become a loner. Many dark skinned black people are ostracized by lighter skinned black people. Hello? Society hasn't created different categories of black - the law says if you have a drop of black blood, you're black! We, as a race, have to make LOTS of changes if we expect to be taken seriously in this country.
I know alot of white people I don't consider racist - they've grown up separated from other races and the only dealings they've had is what they see on TV. At least recent generations had 'The Cosby Show'. I've met white people who expected me to act like Flo on the Jeffersons or Thelma on Good Times; this is what they saw black women portrayed as. Unless everyone (all races) is willing to teach our children that everyone's equal and speak up in a united voice, we can expect to remain and to be treated as separate.
That is EXACTLY how it is Blackbitch here in Tx,Darker guys treat me like garbage, light skinned ones usually treat me like a dog,and white people women start clutching their purses tighly when I am seen with my natural hair texture, not to mention being followed like a criminal in just about any store, and the rudeness is truly pathetic,vs.when it's not obvious of my ancestry..these things do not happen,I have never been arrested for ANYTHING period.Do you'll have any idea how hard it is for me to sell my creations, without pratically being accused of stealing them...rather than makeing them? The concept of a partially black artist is NOT in the American mindset.Other people of color that I do know...say art is a "white thing"..Thats BS.Then of course I am expected to have horrible grammer by white people,vs..according to black I am acting white...what the hell????..I can't win...so Yeah..I am and have become a loner.
Haveing a black leader???...Yeah right..None of the wannabes will even acknowledge my existance..somehow I am even more embaressing to them than I am to the white population.
I am not mad at Todd YET,he has said before that he wants to understand things,so I will accomadate him,is he racist?..I don't think so,he may be in the sterotypical sense, but certainley not outright.
