LOTR is taking 'em all! Ok not all, but more than any to this point.

Remains to be seen on the biggies though.

Long live Tolkien! (Oh wait, he's dead.)

Excellent movie!! Wonderful soundtrack. Can ya keep those of us glued to the computer and away from the TV posted on what's happening?

Enn Zed ROCKS!

Good on ya, Kiwis!

It's past my bedtime, and I'm fer the off...

But it was nice to hear acceptance speeches in the dulcet tones of 'Strine & Kiwi-ese upon the stage in LA-La Land this evening.

Thanks Zam - cool post...we won't get the news over here until a wee bit later - but already I have a tear in my eye!

I'm a just bursting with pride! :D

This is so messed up!

LOTR lost to BM for Best adapted screen-play.

This is a sham!

The incredible task of adapting a classic like LOTR was momumental! No one wanted to do it!

Opie does me proud

Jackson losses to Howard. Damn. But I can't be sad for a fellow red-head doing good.

Oh well...there's still best movie!

One of the two directors of the Shrek movie was from New Zealand and they got an Oscar!

Also most of the oscars for LOTR were from New Zealnd companies and people.

When you consider how small NZ is compared to other countries (we are heaps smaller in population than New York) Us Kiwis are feeling pretty good today.

ALSO did you see the Kiwi guy win the golf today !!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, we can't forget Russel who was in the best movie... another Kiwi......

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Important point, vixenshe. LOTR-The Fellowship of the Ring is only part of a story. Nominating it for best adapted screenplay is pushing it, since the source material isn't a whole book to begin with.

I'm sure someday the three LOTR films will get the recognition they deserve, but the Oscars focus only on the products of a single year.

1. Lotr did not deserve cinematography. It had an a straight on approach, give me Amelie, Moulin or BHD over it in the cinematography dept. Shooting preety landscape != cinematography

2. Lavy's right, Moulin is not a suck up movie, it was a movie that did what few (Including your beloved LOTR) ever do: It took a slew of risks. It decided to be perhaps one of the most stylized looks Hollywood has produced in quite a long time. Every shot had an unrealistic vision about it, a busy, elaborate look. Everything is in a magical fantasyworld set in France. Watch the way it's shot, the variable speeds, the vision. Do you see this vision in most films such as the Fast and the Furious, Spaceballs (Pulling random movies out of the air, no reason for them), or Jack Frost 2?

No. It was an amazing amount of risks and an even greater amount of imagination and vision.

It's more of a risk than taking something that has a cult following and appeals to repitivie viewing and obsessive geeks. Like it or not, LOTR was a 'safe' pic.

Lord of the Rings IMO was the best movie I have seen
this year.
Peter Jackson and crew did a wonderful job based
on the amazing books of J.R.R.Tolkien.
I am looking foward to the next movie and wish I didn't
have to wait so long.

It may appear to have been a 'safe pic' but I don't see how.

Most of the 'pretty scenery' was created. In New Zealand we do have a beautiful land. Waterfalls etc. But a lot of what you see in the movies was created, including the Hobbit village.

I live in New Zealand and I was speechless and totally
impressed by the cinematography.

This movie transported me into the movie that represents J.R.R.Tolkien's books.

LOTR is not my beloved movie either. I truly enjoyed it and
wished I had read the books first. I am going to rectify that
before I watch the next movie. :)

Um, that would be a "no". How many years has it been since a musical has won an academy award.

Moulin Rouge got terrible reviews. It was not a movie made for consumption by the masses.

[Friendly Tone]
That's just my point, and you're right it wasn't made for the masses, it was specifically for the Academy voters and reeked of: 'Oh are we wonderful sensative people to make a musical in these times' It was made to win very specific awards, and it lost, specifcally Makeup. Just my opinion :D

I just have to say that, when Return of the King comes out, all of those people that voted against LOTR this year will be kicking themselves, because they will understand the full scope of the movie, the work put into it, and the impact it has on the lives of people around the world.

Accept that consolation.

You're so right on the mark vixenshe! You go girl!

Can you believe they lost Best Adapted Screen Play? What a farce!

LOTR just lost Best Movie to...Beautiful Mind

Sad, sad, sad.

I'm glad I didn't stay up to watch. I don't watch much TV or go to the movies very often, but I was spellbound watching LOTR. Maybe we should suggest a re-count.
