The world of kink...a misnomer?

I have been doing some reading on various kinks and the history behind them when a common trait began to reveal itself. I have found that kink tends to manifest itself primarily in the Judeo-Christian world. I say primarily because Japan is one place that is involved in kink but is not Judeo-Christian. What I have seen so far makes me think that Japan's involvement in such practices may stem from their westernization, just a theory of mine at this moment.

This has brought me to think a bit deeper about kink and it's place in the world. I now wonder, what about the Judeo-Christian world lends itself to be so kinky compared to the rest.

I thought that since I am not a religious person nor knowledgeable about world religions to understand this better I would toss it up in here and see if others might shed a bit more light on this.

I do happen to be religious myself and I am a huge fan of theological discourse, so I'll give my two cents to a great topic.

Firstly, I think that all societies, not just our modern western world has social taboos of a wide variety. I would disagree that kink tends to manifest itself in a primarily Judeo-Christian society. I would rather remark that since our society is more open and expressive, it probably just looks like we have more social taboos. If you were to study some indiginous African or South American tribal groups, I'm coinfident you'll find a similar instance of kinky behavour, and obviously different social outlooks on what defines kink. I don't think the case has to do some much with theocratic history, as opposed to the level of social interaction we tend to have in Europe and North America. I don't think the Judeo-Christian world is any more or less kinky than the Muslim world, or the Buddist world, or the world of indiginous faiths for that matter.

Once again, great topic!

I don't think it is the influence of Christian nations, actually from what I have come across over time there was a lot more kink in several other societies and cultures. Perhaps it is more because you live in the western world and are exposed to the western version of how things are that it has developed as a primariy western notion.

I have looked for sources on the net on this but as of yet I have come up empty handed. I understand that it is not as open in some areas but surely there is information that one can come by. Part of the windfall would be discovering something new to add to my repertoire.

I think you have people doing things that are not necessarily kinked in that culture that are embraced, sexualized, and marginalized as "kink" in the west. Go look at the non-western origins of body modifications.

Hindu culture is full of kink, and it isn't exactly "recent". Two words: Kama Sutra

Japanese rope bondage was around a LONG time before they had much contact with the west. Samurai practiced a form called "hoho-jitsu" (I think that's correct spelling) to bind prisoners, and Japanese police practice a form of that still today.

There are Cro-Magnon cave paintings of a pornographic nature, fer pete's sake. There are pornographic records from Assyria, Sumeria, Persia, ancient Egypt, Greece, and pre-Christian Rome. And post Christian Rome was rife with kink. Remember Caligula? Hell, even Eskimos have kink.

Kink has been around the world and in every culture since long before the Jews or Jesus. You just don't read about the kinky records or get pictures in "respected academic circles". Not because it isn't there but because "Judeo-Christian academic types" are generally squicky as hell about sex. Sexual information is _suppressed_ in the west in general and ESPECIALLY in the United States, so you don't get anything approaching an accurate picture of sex and kink throughout history. You have to do private research or go underground to get access to it.

Happy researching!
