You say tomayto... we say tomahto...
Phrases like these: "Does my fanny look big in this?", "Come here 'n' let me pat you on the fanny" and "Kiss my fanny!" are liable to cause British people to blush and fall off their chairs.
In fact - there'd be a bit of an uproar if the British equivalent of Oprah used the word "fanny" on her daytime show.
I remember being being shocked at 8 years old by the blatant vulgarity of the Star Wars comic. I didn't feel it was appropriate for Han Solo to tell Chewie he was going to kick him in the "fanny" if he didn't get the Millennium Falcon fixed in time. Fair enough, old Han was a bit of a loveable rogue but that was just going TOO FAR!
It's not that us Limies are particularly sensitive about our bottoms over here. It's just that in Britain "fanny" is the common coloquialism for vagina.
Why not join in the fun - see how many "fannies" you spot on all your favourite day-time shows.
Hey Australians! There's also minor hilarity to be had whilst watching Aussie soaps whenever a character says something like this: "Aw, check him out - he's a bit of a spunk". In the UK "spunk" is a coloquialism for sperm. Heeheeheehee.
So, I say "Vive Le Difference!" It's much funnier that way.
