The stigma of adulthood

What is it about being an adult that precludes us from participating in certain activities? Yesterday while driving home I drove by the volleyball field and noticed to young kids building a sand castle. I remember when I was their age doing almost the same thing.

Whos to say that playing in the dirt is any less fun now that several years have passed; Then it was when we were children?

I don't know about you but every once in a while I think about how fun it would be just to go play in the mud, go build a treehouse or fort out in the woods, go bodyboarding, swing on a swingset, hell even do the teetertotter thing.

am I alone in this, do these urges really disappear once you become a working adult?

An added bonus of having children, you can do all those fun things without people looking at you like you're crazy.

The urges definitely don't disappear. Our crew of working adults was essentially told to start behaving recently. I just can't see it happening :D

I'm one of these happy daddies every second w/e. A lot of flashbacks when my 3yo lil princess and I are playing all these childish games... thank you Mavie. I love you

Last time we had her Barbie doll at the playground ....

This is one of the reasons we have kids.

The other is to have someone who can't build as good as sand castle.

I think those childlike desires manifest themselves in new ways.

Just read some of the posts here on the GB or the Playground.

Exactly. We've done so many fun things with our kids: waterslides, playing in the sand, swings, we have even gone through some of the tubes at the Chuckee Cheese kid's place! Yeah. We're nuts.

Ah, but I don't have children, and the likelyhood of me having children is very very slim.

My favorite childhood activity is something I still do to this day with my 6 year old. I go outside in the yard of my mother's house and play in the garden hose/sprinkler. We spray each other, play in the mud and take turns watering the garden. People drive by and give us strange looks, but, I don't care. I just don't want to completely grow up.

I don't know if I could be considered a "working adult" cause I'm really a "stinky college student". Either way, the urges have not disappeared and I give into them on a daily basis.

Like when me and Kotori talk, I always play the shadow game and repeat everything he says until it starts to drive him insane. Do it one day to your boss, I bet it would be ever funnier.

It doesn’t really seem weird to see me and one of my friends playing with kids in the park, I guess people just assume it’s a younger sibling. Anyway, I like playing in sandboxes and dirt rocks my world.

...I still have childish wants...but now I have adult wants too...right now I want to have sex on the teetertotter...:D

...

My son and I sometimes fight over toys whilst mucking about together.

I have to convince him that I can build a way-cool castle for his dragons before he will let me. Then he smacks me in the head with something and I tickle him before we chase each other around the room.

When I was a kid I never wanted to sit on anyone's head in order to annoy them... My son does that. I worry about him sometimes. ;)

Oops, shouldve answered the question...

No they dont dissapear...

...Who likes the latest stuff out by Imaginext?

I think that a better question would be...why would you want to do all those things?

What is the appeal of those activities to you?

I think is because what are generally seen as child's activities are unencumbered by rules and expectations.

You can create, be silly, be stupid, fall on your face, and have a good time without being self-conscious.

Self consciousness is the beast that makes Adults of us ;)

And her goal is to never do a day's work in her life.

I just let her think it bothers me--it makes her laugh, and that's how I have my fun. And that should be "when kotori and I talk.":p

Who has at least one toy where they work?

...

No NO NO! The kind they want to play with on thier own.

(those whom the above is for need not ask. You know who you are already even if I dont.)

i'm an overgrown boy. i love toys and comic books and cartoons and faerie tales and mythology and being silly and stuff. i love being mischevious.

I dont have kids. but when I was younger I was the adult. now that I am older I am laughing and having fun like a kid again. and dont care who sees me or approves. better than a nervouse break down... and life is funner now:D

You know how sometimes you see a kid just walking along, bawling their eyes out, moaning "it's not faaaaaaaiiiiirrrr"? How come we're not allowed to do that as adults? We have so much more reason to, really.
