Seems to have been a bit since any of us posted here. The concrete trucks started rolling through about half an hour ago. I guess that they're placing another slab at the new apartment building going in two blocks away.

Of course, they have to drive up my street to get there.

It's kind of funny to live in the city and yet have a construction project close to home. You think of those as being in the outlying areas. The university is responsible for most of this. I don't know if this new one is student housing, or if it's privately built to cater to students, but if it weren't for the college, this area would be deader than it is.

I live downtown in a smallish southern city, with a downtown university and a lot of neat old houses and neighborhoods around the area. The city government is still fighting the civil rights struggle and acts like it's stuck in the sixties, the main businesses downtown left for the suburbs years ago, and I work fixing old houses so at least the population will stop dropping.

I live in a 100 YO building, built as a storefront with the living quarters over. The upstairs was divided in two - I have the front and a friend has the back. The downstairs is an office that my landlord set up for the business he hasn't started yet. He works for the state - he probably never will.

I really need to buy one of these old critters for myself. All things in time.

mbb, you just described most of the Southern cities. Amazing how behind the times they still are today... Dallas still way behind in civil rights... they let the needs of the Blacks drop off behind the needs of the Hispanic community... although the Black community has finally gained positions in city council, their needs are still not being met. A game of representation by numbers... and ongoing gerrymandering (sp?) of the voting districts.

Glad I'm outa there.

I can say that Dallas did well in all of those areas too... but it remains a place where minorities don't get a fair shake. Of course, keep in mind that this is Texas, where all the politicians weild family millions and well-known last names... The "good ole boys" society is still alive and well there...

I've always preferred military calibers because you can get military surplus ammo cheap in large quantity. You can get many used military rifles pretty cheap, too. And they are almost idiot-proof and built to last. Most have many thousands of rounds of useage left in them.

Hack up a big one for me, please.
