LSU campus, 2013

The whole campus was in an uproar after last night’s performance from a temptress the school had dubbed ‘The Nite Siren’. The woman appeared at a blues club, wearing a mask and in a dress that had to have been painted on. Dark hair that cascaded down her back elegantly and her lips painted a seductive red, her dark eyes were focused on one man, Jesse Delmont. He was the town’s biggest playboy and no girl had ever managed to tame his ways. Siren’s performances had begun one night about a month ago and her sole attention had always been on Jesse. Her songs were that of a longing for him, written to seduce a man into doing her every whim. Jesse would never admit anything but he began to frequent that club more and more.

What they didn’t know was that the owner of the club knew exactly who she was because the owner was Siren’s mother. Her real name was Pamela Nightsong, a young girl who was studying to be a psychologist. She wasn’t shy by any means but Pamela never went out of her way to get attention like some of the girls in this town. Her mother ran the small club called Tropic to bring a piece of old classic style to the new generation. Her mother went by the name Nikita Moore so no one ever connected them.

Jesse had no idea that she had a desire for him or that she was the one doing her best to drive him crazy, looking for her in every girl he saw. Pam just never stuck out for him, even though they had classes together since their freshman year here. At this stage of her life, Pam was of a mind that most men needed proper guidance or they resorted to idiocy. She was very conservative in how looked and dressed. When she was on stage, Pam made sure to enhance ever asset she had for him. Her father had been the front man for a band called Bella Musica. He died when she was four years old, leaving them the club and a mountain of heartache.

She would see Jesse around the campus looking distracted and not at all like himself. After that first performance, Pam was almost in denial that she had some kind of an effect on him. Then she heard from one of the girlfriends of one of his drinking buddies that he was bonkers over Siren and was determined to figure out who she was. That had made her slightly uneasy since she did not want to be found out by anyone at this point. Maybe she had really pushed it with this last performance. After the song had been sung, she had walked up to him with a rare orchid in her hand. Innocently she had placed it in his hand and leaning up on tip tops, placed a kiss on his lips. The room had erupted in hoots and hollers.

She had pulled away before her instincts could kick in and she would bury herself into the warmth of his arms. Jesse seemed almost dazed to her and almost managed to stop her from leaving. Pam had thought she was caught for sure when he had her pinned in the hallway against a wall. That had been the most intense sexual feeling in her life. His lips had hovered just above her own, his breathing labored. Bobo, the bouncer, came up on them and yelled. “Let her go, buddy. Siren is free to come and go as she pleases.” Forced to let Pam loose, she went about her usual routine after performing.

Today she was in the music department’s class room where the grand piano was. Whenever she was stressed, Pam loved just coming in here and playing a few tunes. Some of the idiot ‘blondies’, as she called them, were giving her hell for drawing attention that their sorority was into underage drinking. After the death they had a few years ago, the school came down hard on them. All she wanted now was to get lost in the melody of the piano. It was late afternoon and most of the student were in the dorms at the time so she was safe. Slowly Pam began to play Etta James’ At Last, one of her favorites. The words flowed from her as easily as a nursery rhyme.

The song blanketed her, helping her to feel more balanced. Pam was not alone as she thought she might be and it all came crashing down once she finished the song. Pam put the cover down on the piano keys and went to stand when she saw Jesse just inside the door, a very intense look on his face. It was pretty evident from the look on his face that she had just given herself away.
