Mika blinked just as she heard the door shut behind her and a familar voice say, "Whew that was close. We almost didn't get her back in time." Mika quickly walked to her beside and pulled out her journal. She checked the latest entry Oct. 5th 2054. She looked at her watch. Today was Oct. 7th! She was missing a day again. She knew something was up. This was no longer a coincidence. She was sure she was losing her mind. She had to tell her father. Mika turned to the door and hesitated. She wasn't sure, but she had the ominous feeling that she was NOT to ever leave this room. That was absurd. Mika has come and gone as she pleased before, but why now did she suddenly feel anxious?!
Mika glanced down at her journal and read the last line with a growing horror. "... I don't remember yesterday again! I think I'm going crazy. I'm going to go straight to bed and in the morning maybe it'll make sense." Mika flipped to Sept 17th, the most recent entry where she was missing time and just as she thought she went to bed after journaling. Mika flipped to each entry where she was sure she was missing one day and sure as shit each and every time she had went to bed. She never, not once had tried to leave the room, not until morning. Mika's heart was pounding. Even now she wanted to journal this insane revelation and then crawl into bed. But not leave the room. Why? Why did she never leave her room and why was she suddenly scared as shit each time she thought of leaving the room before morning.
Mika walked slow agonizing step by step to her door. She was determined she was going to walk out this room, but her heart was pounding and she was gasping for air. Twice she had to stop and only once did she have to turn her back and slowly breathe or lest she was afraid she would pass out. She could not figure out what was wrong with her. Why was she like this? Mika finally was at the door and she was in tears. She grabbed the doorknob, turned and opened it in a rush similar to pulling off a band aid. As soon as the door was open she instantly felt relief. She visibly sighed unsure what the fuck that was about. She definitely had to tell her father.
Mika's room was on the 2nd floor of a ...what could only be described as a mini mansion. Mika rolled her eyes as it had to be huge. It housed the servants from the cooks to the maids and even the people who worked with her father the Governor of Galatea. It also housed what she thought was a small army to protect the family from any raiders or people from Outside. That's what they called outsiders. Ever since 2042 after the Great War the world kind of went to shit. Technology was lopsided being mostly with vehicles and computers, but weapons have reverted back to the old years with swords being the weapon of choice, followed by longbow and then bow, staff, etc. The technology for guns being annihilated and wiped out though there were rumors there were scientists out there trying to recreate the lost art. Hell, even she was trained in self-defense in how to use a knife; though she was clumsy and Mika was good at using her brain and how to read a situation to escape. She was often encourage by her trainers to think of alternate ways than to fight head on.
She took the tube to the other side of the house. The "tube" was like a giant chute with a number pad. You punch in the number of the corresponding "exit" and then you step into the chute. Depending on where you're going you could be sucked up or free falling before you are placed on your feet of where you intended to go. You had to bend your knees right when you felt gravity return which is why the tube was not recommended for children or the elderly. It could shatter their kneecaps. See! Technology was great in some areas and in others thrust back to the stone age.
Mika gingerly stepped out of the tube and looked towards the right where her father's office door was cracked open and light was pouting into the darken hallway. It was weird as she was used to seeing at least two armed guards on this side of the door, but there was none. Mika walked quietly up to her father's door and was about to push the door open before she heard her father say her name shocking her into not moving especially when she hard how hard and cruel he said her name. "I assume MIKA is back in her room. It's done?"
"Yes, your daughter preformed wonderfully as ever."
"Tool you mean," her father's voice laughed as Mika realized he meant SHE was the tool.
"She is exquisite," said the unfamilar voice speaking to her father. "Where did you find her again? It's a shame she's the only successful candidate from the project. Are you sure we can't get more?"
"I told you," Mika's father said in annoyance, "...Mika's real father was a researcher on the project and said it has to do with the brain pattern. There's a less than 0.1% chance of someone having the perfect set up. You can't just find someone and train them like Mika. They have to already have the right ... brain wiring for it. Mika is a rare find and we discovered her at a very young age. This is how we're able to put so many personalities in her and add more as we see fit." Her father (... no Mika realized with horror this man was not her father) laughed cruelly and the other man joined in. Suddenly her father's mirth stopped and his voice grew cold and sharp. "She is one of a kind. The only one. So do Not. Ask. Again."
He's not my father?! What happened to my real dad. He said WAS a researcher. Does that mean they killed my dad? What about my mom? How do I not know these things? Even as Mika tried she could not recall ever having a mother. She wondered why this thought had never occurred to her before. What did he mean by personalities? She had .. different personalities? Mika was trying to figure that out. As much as she knew she was Mika - quick thinking, hard working, clumsy but charming, cute Mika. She didn't know what that could even possibly mean; add personalities?!
Suddenly the door opened and she was staring with shocked eyes at her father who face went from a hard stare, to shock, to a softness that now looked fake. How did she not notice that before? "How did you leave your room?"
What a weird fucking question?!
"...Mika, baby girl are you okay?"
Mika nodded and walked quickly to the tube. She could hear her father calling her name, but she practically ran to the tube and pushed the number to exit closest to her room. Right before she got off she put the coordinates for a bunch of other places and put her hair scrunchy in the middle of the floor to tie up the tube so no one could use it for at least the next 10 minutes. Mika quickly grabbed a bag she had kept packed in case they were ever under attack and had to make a quick get-a-away. Mika wasn't sure what she was going to do, but everything in her told her to run! Mike pulled her thick hair into a high pony and put a cap on it, then she dressed in all black and put on her most comfiest pair of sneakers. This was real life. Not a movie.
Mika took the route from her room, down the side of the house, through the brush and out a side hole only she knew about. She used this way to sneak out to go party and drink with friends without her dad .. no Mika shook her head. She wouldn't think of that man as her father. The governor. ...without the Governor finding out she had snuck out. Time was running out. Mika ran and ran and normally she would have been out of breath and gasping for air, but it felt like she was really in shape and for a moment she thought that she was running differently. It was like she knew when to breath in and out so that she wasn't over exerting herself and could get the most distance. Mika was a bit perplexed before she chalked it up to adrenaline from running away. Just because she made it out the house didn't mean she was home free. She still had to leave the city and get at least a few miles away before she could breathe a sigh of relief.
It was morning when Mika finally relaxed enough not to jump at every sound. She had exited the city hours ago with a wave to the gate guard. She was afraid he would have stopped her, but the news either hadn't traveled that far or the governor wasn't coming after her ... yet. Actually, there was no guarantee he would come after her, right? She wasn't his real daughter and .. honestly she wasn't sure why he kept her around ... maybe something about those personalities? Mika didn't know, but she had a plan. While she had been freaking out trying to figure out how to leave the city she was also trying to figure out her next steps. She realized she desperately wanted to find her real family and find out what happened to her. So she was going to the last place she remember the Governor had said he worked before the Great War and became the Governor. She wished she had taken a hoverbike, but she was going to take the less traveled road as she didn't want anyone to realize she was on her way to Mountain View, CA. She was sure the Google building had to be abandon and maybe she could find out what happened.
