The Official Author's Hangout Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

More spewed shit, scouries? With more stolen images?

No oggie a simple reply to your self serving statement that it’s okay for certain people to enter more than one story and jump the line but if too many others did it the practice would have to be banned. It’s a bullshit argument and we both know it. And as long as you and others “spew” it I’ll be there to challenge it.

You lost me years ago when you didn’t have the balls to stand up and say that SusieQ (or whatever name she was using in those days) shouldn’t be allowed to enter 15 or 20 or 25 stories in every contest. Although you were THREADMASTER it was others who had to step up as you faded off into the English night.

An unwillingness to stand up for anything that was simply highlighted later when you defended the moonman’s right to entered a story in a voter decided contest with the voting turned off.

So don’t now try to act the tough guy after you were tossed out of the job for being such a wimp. Too late pal…

The more I think about my previous contest entries, Ogg's points about how contest entries can increase overall readership, and how I tend to write in a variety of sub-genre's when it comes to erotica - the more I'm thinking this might be the perfect contest for me to submit two or three different stories. Maybe a gay male, a group sex, and something else. You know, just as a way to demonstrate my diversity.

Don't forget to include a character Pauletta to annoy he-who-should-not-be-named.

Gosh, I didn't know that. But actually, I think that's a very pretty name. I know this isn't the story idea thread, but I still might need to use it. Is it just me or does that name suggest a crossdresser to you, too? I've only written one crossdressing story and it was an incest story - My Sister Turned Me into a Slut.

Respectfully to the forum, these are genuine plot bunnies I'm considering. Thanks for the backhanded suggestion, ogg!

You are close, but not a CD. Pauletta is the name of a San Francisco drag queen I sometimes write about. :)

I'm with you, Box, but I'm pretty sure any Pauletta I would write about would turn out to be a CD and the story would have to include a lot of gay sex. I trust the Lit world is big enough for more than one character named Pauletta?

I have acquired plot bunnies from very unlikely sources. It isn't the source that matters, it's whether the story turns out to be worthwhile.

Shouldn't be any less worthwhile than the rest of the drivel I've posted. :)

Names.

Dammit.

Nothing keeps a blank page completely blank like my inability to quickly decide on character names.

Why can't "Nameless Motherfucker" work out okay for me as a place-holder until I come up with something appropriate?

Why do you need names? I have a story I wrote with 6 strangers, only one of whom has a name. Story is in the editor shop that way.

Of course, while out for a walk just now, I came up with a cute ploy for my story that solves the name issues.

I have a story in work that has 19 characters with the same name. :D

Cloning is so much fun.

jeanne_d_artois has made a start on her Laundry Tale for Summer Lovin', set in the early 1920s.

I am about a quarter of the way through a summer on Tripletit tale.

But, who knows? I might not finish either of them and I might start a totally new story.

I'm so guilty of using such generic (to me) names. Here's some help that I use, though - the U.S. Social Security Department listing of most popular baby names by year, decades, states, and even U.S. territories http://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/

To both: HOLY SHIT! Great job!

I have a collection of Baby Name books. It started when I acquired a couple in my secondhand bookshop. I put them together on a shelf, and whenever some others came in, I added them to that part of the shelf. After ten years of trading I had to move them from the shelf to a box on the floor.

When I retired and closed the shop I hadn't sold a single Baby Name book...

So I kept them.

I wrote a story recently with the main character nameless. The idea was you substituted your own name ( the story being about a writer). Pity, it would have seemed laboured to make him genderless as well.

I also look at the lists of popular baby names, just to remind me of various ones, and then pick one that "sounds right" in the context. I try to steer away from names ending in "s" simply because of the annoying way you have to write:

I wanted to fuck Chris' wife.

I hate that trailing apostrophe. I know you need it, but whatever. If I can make it go away, I will.

Speaking of motherfuckers, I am working on a story where someone fucks his mother. And then have another character call him a motherfucker. Has a nice ring to it.

Of course. I have used that name for some other characters too, but the one he has a hardon for is the drag queen.

That hardon is strictly a waste of his time. Pauletta is quite particular about his sex partners, because he has a live in boy friend, and is so cute he has never had a shortage of suitors.

I'm being molested by a second plot bunny but in order for it to work I'd need to have some song lyrics in it because it's the ringtone on the main characters phone. Which is blaring an embarrassing song in an embarrassing situation.

I know it is illegal to use more than a couple of lines of a song normally but what if I give full credit to the band in the authors note?

First: given that the maximum money you'll ever make on this story is $150 (unless you try to sell it later), nobody's gonna care.

Second: if you find a way to name or credit the artist, there's hardly even a question to it.

The absolute nightmare scenario for you would be a cease and desist letter asking you to take it down from the site. Go ahead and quote away.

Red, thanks, all well here generally, children doing well, granddaughter more beautiful every day, Herself recovering well from heavy-duty oral surgery.

Looking forward to a strong field of entrants for the Summer Lovin'. More and even better writing!

My entry will be written closer to the submission date than I like it to be, but at least the story is in my head. I may or may not make it to the opening day. The kids head back to school on the 15 and 16 of August, and then I can devote my days to writing and getting things ready for e-publishing. Those two things have taken a ride on the back burner while summer has been progressing.

Anyway... I'm a bit unclear about the whole multiple entries thing. Sure, I could read the rules, but it's easier to just ask... I get that it's okay to submit more than one entry. How many of the seasoned people do that and what's your thought on the idea? I'm not necessarily seeing the personal advantage, but I'm probably missing something.

I only enter one story, but that's my own personal thing. I figure if I have other stories that fit the theme, it doesn't matter. I'll still write them, but not enter them in the contest. I had 2 stories that would have fit for the Winter contest, but I only entered the one. I think the other would have been a better choice, but again, I had finished it after the fact and would have had to put all 6 parts (it is in novel/novella genre) as one and that would have made for a VERY long story for a contest.

Been trying to get back to writing... the girlfriend and I finally have our move more or less done, and I have my own office in which to write, and at last I have my own office chair back.

So here's my conundrum:

*I have a fantasy (swords, sorcery, skimpy outfits) story in mind that involves a goodly deal of sexy fun, but I'm not sure how "summer"-ish it is. Conversely, I feel like the world-building part of it would be pretty easy.

*The other story I have in mind involves a bastardization of medieval-tournament meets Roman-gladiatorial-games in a post-apocalyptic Seattle (may be apocalypse-via-magic), which seems to me like a lot of fun, and more easily "summer"-ish... but that's a lotta world-building, and I haven't figured out where the "erotic" part comes in yet.

So now I'm stuck.

Darn it.

Last year I had all of two or three people make commentary as to what my sword-and-sorcery story had to do with "summer," and yet that has stuck with me ever since. And now that I'm looking at this contest again, I'm still stumped on that issue. It's such a vague theme, y'know?

If the commentary bothered you enough that you aren't wanting to deal with it again this year, then don't enter them in the contest and just write them. I don't see a summer theme either, but in the end it's really up to you. I guess my question is, if you don't see them as "summer" why have them in the contest in the first place? If you do see them as "summer" than that's all that matters. I had a couple comments about my Earth Day one not fitting the theme, but I felt it fit and that's what counts.

Just to get us talking about writing and not about other stuff:

When you're inspired for a story for this site, do you find that you usually come up with a plot situation first, or the erotic situation? Sometimes I find that I'm inspired for one and then the other comes along later, and it tends to flip from one to the next as far as which comes to me first.

I'm clearly having that sort of conundrum for this contest. My more interesting premise doesn't seem to have a lot of sex to go with it at first glance; I'm sure I could find a good erotic situation or angle for it, but it's not there on the front cover for me.

Anyone else often have this trouble?

I think most of my stories come from the erotic idea first, but not all of them.

This year my summer loving entry is actually an idea that the spouse gave me and as he tossed a simple idea out there, my head manifested it into something that would be great for summer. It'll be flamed because of the category (LW), but that's okay, I'll live.

LW ain't as bad as it used to be. The real nuts are out flaming any and all stories in all categories that even hint at cheating.

...

This is my first post about my actual story.

I've been afraid to mention it up until now... it's in the incubator, on life support, but I'm starting to think it will pull through.

Keep an eye out for Starbursts, Sulfur, and the Taste of Ashes.

It was definitely a case of finding the name first, and fitting the story around it. :)
