The Official Author's Hangout Halloween Contest Support Thread

I submitted my story today. I guess I'll be the second Lesbian Sex contribution. I have no delusions that I'll win anything, having gone the costume route instead of horror but I just wanted to get myself writing. Good luck everyone! :)

I didn't go the horror route either, unless BDSM automatically counts as horror. Which it may to some.
Good luck!

Sorry to have to ask- I'm fairly new to the contests, but what is a vote sweep & what causes it? Also, I see posts of "Beware Fake Contests" but the only contests I ever see are listed on the opening page; is there another place or are these all ok?

i'm fairly new to the contest stuff as well but in my estimation, a vote sweep happens to toss out the duplicate votes/votes intended just to rig the contest like someone giving a perfectly good story a 1 in the hopes of boosting their story... or something like that.

as for the contests listed on the main page, those are the real Lit contests. apparently there are some side ones created by users and some disagreements as to their validity but i haven't explored that much other than to have read some of the comments in this thread. *Shrug* i just want to write about my favorite passtime. i don't really care about the outcomes from there. :)

You're sure to get better answers than mine, but here's what I've gleaned from my first year of being on this site: there is a person who promotes his own contests and as far as I've been able to distinguish, his advertisement and promotion for his contests are as fake as claimed. What isn't clean would be why the site moderators allow his self-promotion scheme to continue. The site moderators appear to be as "hands-off" their site as possible, interacting only to enforce blatant rule violations. Beyond that, they appear to trust the community at large to self regulate. A few lit members have made it their mission to discredit this rouge member at every turn. It's an interesting (and somewhat annoying) battle to watch.

As for sweeps, there are apparently "trolls" who have no greater interest than to be spoil sports. Additionally, in an open contest (such as these) with real prizes, there will always be those who seek an unfair advantage by voting themselves up while voting others down. The sweeps are designed to help mitigate the effects of rogue voters. They come into play later in the contest.

Sometimes, a popular author with a wide following will have well intentioned followers who will attempt to vote multiple times for that author's stories. Sometimes, these well intentioned followers may vote against stories from other authors. It's impossible to regulate 100%, but a token effort does seem to be taken by the moderators of this site to mitigate the impact of these behaviors. Hence, we have "sweeps" were some people will lose points while others will gain points.

To borrow from the current headlines, this activity tends to draw the same cries as the recent unemployment statistics here in the States. Some, who fear an improving unemployment rate helps to support Obama, claim the numbers have somehow been manipulated. While that appears unlikely, who knows? Maybe the conspiracy theorists have had it correct all along.

Pushing all this aside... it's a friendly competition where most of the contestants seem content to whine, moan or crow as the wind blows. Enjoy it with that in mind and I think you'll stay mostly sane. I hope that helps!

There is a post in the Summer contest thread that is apparently a cut & paste from Laurel (one of the site owners) herself, saying that it is OK for authors to vote (once) for their own stories.

My own single vote for my current story, however, seems by all indications to have been swept recently.

That's fine with me, really. As a contestant, I can see why any vote that I cast has to be looked at with care. If the powers that be don't want me voting, I can surely understand that. I'll just say I find it ironic under the circumstances to be a swept vote.

As an author, I would rather that we all not vote. Let the readers be the ones to make the choice. All I ask is that the writers know what the rules are.

Sweeps

Sorry to have to ask- I'm fairly new to the contests, but what is a vote sweep & what causes it?

You'll know you've been "swept" when the number of votes for your story goes down. Effectively that means that votes (good or bad) that their system deems are invalid have been removed.

More often than not, at least recently, the sweeps will improve your score, indicating someone who dislikes you or your story has given it multiple 1-votes.

Of course, the number of votes goes up anyway from day to day, so it is hard to tell exactly how many votes were swept. Say your votes goes down by 3 you might have had 10 swept, but received 7 new ones (a net loss of 3).

bittersweet

after much incessant ocd inspired checking, my story is finally up. YAY
my one and only vote so far is a 1. OUCH

ahhh, the fun begin!

25!

My main goal in entering this comp was to get the regulated 25 votes to make me eligible for the contest and unless the sweeps get me I have 25! *Does a little happy dance*

Good luck to all the people who are in it to win it :)

nice, i'll go take a read and vote and then you'll be at 26 and can get swept one and never even notice. :) good luck to you as well!

sun_sea_sky, thanks for reading and commenting. i guess i need to (re-re-re) re-read my story and look at the capitalization. i didn't notice anything wrong with it before but then, in the push to just make myself finish it, maybe i skipped it entirely. :)

Contest analysis - 2012 Halloween Contest

Good evening. The anachronisms tell me that there are 69 stories in the competition to date, with an average score of 4.09 from an average of 111 votes. Stories had an average of 10,128 views, an average of 3 favorites, and an average of 4 comments. The average ratio of votes to views is 1.08%. The average number of pages is 2.9, with the longest story being 15 pages.

So far there have been a total of 6,918 votes, 698,864 views, 271 favorites and 308 comments.

The standard deviation of scores (from the average of 4.09) is 0.47 and the standard deviation of votes (from the average of 111) is 143. The median score is 4.14, the median number of votes is 54 and the median number of pages is 2. The top 25% of scores are 4.42 or above and the bottom 25% of scores are 3.84 or below.

Sweeps

Some votes have been reduced (swept) since the start of the competition. A total of 13 stories have had their votes adjusted, with 12 sweeps resulting in a new score that day which is higher than before and 3 sweeps resulting in a new score that day which is lower. There were a total of 76 votes swept, being an average of 5 per swept story. The maximum number of votes swept for a single story was 20. (Figures based on toplists, and may not be totally accurate).

Disclaimer

Because of the way this site works these figures will not be totally up-to-date. For a given story the score shown on:

 • The category page
 • The author's page
 • The toplists page

can all be different.

Also it appears that various pages update at different times of the day, sometimes quite infrequently.

Please do not PM me asking for more detailed information. I do not wish to skew contest results by giving a target for voting manipulation.

sun_sea_sky, thanks for reading and commenting. i guess i need to (re-re-re) re-read my story and look at the capitalization.

Just as a couple of examples, DVD is an acroynym (not dvd as you had it). Then in a few places a capital would appear, eg. "that I was Not pining away after Nick". Maybe it was a style thing, but it you wanted to emphasis "not" you could put it in italics (eg. "that I was not pining away after Nick").

Another example: "I Really want her".

I think there were a couple more, I just skimmed that time. Good story though. :)

notwithstanding darkboy's (aka sunny) post there are only 68 LIT contest stories

Here are the LITEROTICA Section of the contest scores at the midway mark. By and large our readers haven't been impressed. Both votes and ratings are lower than usual. The Halloween Conteest seems to have run its course. [

Goldenangel and the good Texan wrote Romances which have been well received but their high scores probably reflects their well earned reputations and not their entries.

LITEROTICA Seection of the contest

Just to advise anybody who might be reading the partially quoted post, there is no such thing as LITEROTICA Seection of the contest. There is only one theme contst going on right now, and it is THE Literotica Halloween Contest. The troll who wrote the post I am partially citing does not run any kind of contest at any time, although (he/she/it) claims to do so.

Second attempt at writing a contest story is progressing.

I might finish both of them. Jeanne's draft is still stalled.

Not well received and lowish scores? Mmmm, not from what I can see. Jackass.

I really love my job, but moving from part-time to full-time makes it very hard to find time to write.

Welcome to the official support thread for the one and only REAL Literotica Halloween contest. Beware fake contests.

And I haven't been writing lately, but I did make these little trick-or-treat bags in the spirit of the season:
