The Official Authors' Hangout Halloween 2022 Contest Support Thread

It was so kind of you to post feedback on everyone's stories That must have taken a lot of time and is much appreciated.
You're welcome. I admit, I like reading what others write...and it also helps me as well. Seeing how all of you out stories together, how you approach character development, intertwine narrative with dialog, etc ... are all very helpful to me. So thank you as well.

And...I really liked your story a lot too :)

I've never known a reason not being given. What was the reason given for rejection?

Ah, doesn't sound too serious. Hope this isn't a case of Briticism spelling rather than American. Presume it went through spell check. I'm sure someone here would be willing to take a look at it for you. I wouldn't suggest going through the volunteer editor route. Usining a regular discussion poster would be faster and probably more helpful.

Errr. ... I really only found 1 misspelling. (I did go through it rather fast, but it was definitely NOT riddled with spelling errors.)

Well, I'm pleasantly surprised. I tossed my story into Scifi and I've picked up a decent amount of views and votes. The score is about on par with my other stuff. I thought it would have sunk without a trace.

Thank you. I have 2 other respected authors reviewing it as well. So far no one sees any issues.
Resubmit it then, saying you've run software spell checks as well as human eye spell checks, and cannot find further mistakes (say you've fixed a few, just to show effort).

Sounds to me like a word bot has hiccuped on something, which a human eye (Laurel's) would let pass.

Its interesting- I write "drunk fetish" in several of my stories...so they are littered with "drunk talking spelling" and they don't get flagged.

I've been getting a fair number of views and reads from SciFi, but being a geek that's where I go to first. I wonder if it's the Halloween page keeping them afloat, but my Scifi entry has receive 5000+ views. my romance entry has received under 3,500 views. Since category and catch phrase are hidden on the Halloween page it can only be the name being the main draw

Nah, not necessarily. When I was solely a reader, I read plenty of contest entries but never bothered with the contest pages. I had my routine: go to the New Stories page and scroll down until something catches your eye.

A lot of readers probably aren't reading from the contest page. How many? We can never know. It's one of the hundreds of variables here that will always confound us.

I did the same thing years ago, then I found a great way to do a keyword search on Lit (and asstr.org) using google and completely ignored the New page and the top lists until the Beta started rolling out.

My story having dropped off the "new" page on Fetish, has now stopped getting votes and many readers.
It suggests not many people look through the front page on Lit, going to their favourite destination in preference?

On average they get 2-3k readers...and it's got 2.4 so it's pretty much on average!

I'm trying to read as many of the Halloween contest stories as I can. I've gone through most of each person's stories here...I think I still need to read one from Lifestyle66. Who have I missed? Once I get 1 of each person's, then I can start on those who have more than 1. :)
I’m not sure if you‘ve read mine yet (just dropped this early AM) but I generally appreciate contest author feedback. https://www.literotica.com/s/you-be-my-hero-ill-be-yours

Funny, but when I was strictly a reader, I almost always looked through the contest entries first, emphasizing authors I was familiar with, or a good, intriguing title. Then to the new list of categories I favored, usually skipping anything that wasn‘t least close to a ‘hot’ rating.

Yep. We never know how readers find our stuff. We're just glad they do, I suppose!

Before I started writing I would just go to the new stories page also. Start reading down till I found one.

I think the new format moves stories off the new story page too quickly and has caused viewers and readers/story To drop.

Because of my kinks...I historically only ever found stories from the search function. I never looked at the new stories. Doh!

I think the new format moves stories off the new story page too quickly and has caused viewers and readers/story To drop.
All the more reason why the title and the descriptive line are very important in attracting readers because once the story is off the first page, views do drop off, in my experience. My subjective sense is that people do read through the contest lists because my viewer number is consistently higher with contests than without even though during contests the stories tend to be pushed down off the first page quicker (more submissions for the contests).

I have just hit 'submit' on my first entry.

I am not sure about my second one. Parts of the plot are very similar but with much less sex as a romance.. I'll leave it for a day or two and have a think...

I have gone to the list of submissions ... and I am reading many of them ... but I really wanted to be sure I got to the people who are posting here :)

I don't think I saw a story on the list from Imstillfun? I will try the search tag idea too though!
Woooohoooo. My story published. Thank you DarkRaven13: Hey All, and lovecraft68 for your help in editing.

Spelling? My Grammarly won't accept my email or password today.

I have had to use a dictionary. I always have a problem spelling ecstasy but I also had to look up hagiology.

When Grammarly is working it tells me I use more unique words than 98 or 99% of Grammarly users. But I doubt many people use hagiology.
