This is an ex-parrot

OSLO (Reuters) - A dispute over four dead parrots will end in a Norwegian court next month.

The owner of the birds wants 25,000 crowns ($3,644) compensation after they drowned in 1999 when a ferry sank off west Norway, killing 16 people. The insurance company has offered 1,500 crowns.

"Some people will think the loss of a few parrots is trivial compared to the big tragedy. But for me it's become a matter of principle," the 55-year-old man told the west Norwegian daily Bergensavisen. "It's bad to treat birds like packages in the post."

The birds had been in a cage on the way to a vet in the port city of Bergen when the ferry hit rocks and sank. The man is due to go to court in Bergen on October 20 against ferry company HSD and insurer Skuld.

HSD spokesman Arild Sondre Sekse said all demands for compensation since the accident had been covered according to Norwegian law.

So, according to Norwegian law parrots in cargo are to be regarded as parcel?

Dunno, SF

All I know is they're evidently offering him $55/avian-corpse for the replacement value. I suppose the lawyers will work it out, but I think it's tragic that they were unable to extricate themselves from their cage, and now can never pine for the fjords again.

The funniest thing about this is that the insurance company is named after one of the Norse fates.

I hope the judge sends them a message for exactly that reason Lukky.

What? That they'd been nailed to thier perches?

Personally I don't like classifying animals as cargo, full stop.
But as one of the few countries still keen on Whaling, this does not suprise me coming from Norway.

If they were nailed, the wrongful death suit should be filed against the perp, no doubt. But..um.. I thought they were just resting.

What I find obscene about that is the fact that they dictate what's necessary for the animal to travel. It's not like you decided you didn't want the animal next to you or under your seat in a carrier.

OK, maybe you can't do that with three birds but still!

Perhaps not.
But I wouldn't even suggest you travel with pets in this country.

Often the cargo hold is the only option presented.
