Yesterday I heard on the news that a little boy wanted to participate in a new procedure that implanted computer chips into people's shoulders on which medical data would be stored.

Has anybody else heard this?

This kind of thing *really* makes me paranoid...

Actually I like this idea.

My daughter has severe allergies. The fact that they could scan her shoulder and know what was her medical history is a good thing.

I suppose it could be helpful, but I'm with you BB... I'd rather wear a medic alert necklace or I.D. on the "outside". Reminds me of the way vets are inserting chips into dogs for I.D. purposes.

Although it would help to I.D. a lot of a person's medical history, the thought gives me visions of the movie "Logan's Run"!

I really don't like where this could go, I could just see some marketing team giving funding to a health project in return for all their info, and a key spot on the data chip.

It could have it's benefits if healthcare doesn't go it's evil little way.

"Logan's Run"

Psst...Ms Jenny,

What was that movie about?

Geezzzz... I'm dating myself again!

Taken from the Logan's Run website (it was a movie then a tv series:

"Sometime in the 23rd Century... the survivors of war, overpopulation and pollution are living in a great domed city, sealed away from the forgotten world outside. Here, in an ecologically balanced world, mankind only lives for pleasure. freed by the servo-mechanisms which provide everything.

There's just one catch.

Life must end at thirty, unless reborn in the fiery ritual of carrousel. "

Each person had a crystal imbedded in the palm of their hand which became their timeclock.

Clear (White) : Birth - 8 Years Old.
Yellow : 9 Years - 15 Years Old.
Green : 16 Years - 23 Years Old.
Red : 24 Years - 30 Years Old.
Black: ..............Death.................... ("Renewal" ceremony!)

Anyway, LTR... the movie must have scared the heck out of me since you were marked with this timing device to die when you were 30. Only chance was to run and try to hide in "sanctuary"!
:D

do you really think its only going to be used for medical purposes?

especially seing as they can now make a GPS tracking chip the size of a thumb nail

Yes, I am paranoid and damn proud of it.

Careful, Jenny, in most of the middle east and many states south of the Mason-Dixon line it's only legal to date somebody else.

:D

there is a new Television show based off this starting this wek on YTV if y'all get that channel. Its being watered down a bit but it is on the theme

All I know is...

I do not want computer chips inplanted in me that only store my own info... that's what palm pilots are for..:D

I dunno, I actully like the idea of having all the medical history scannable and you won't be able to lose it. I'd use it if it was offered to me.

HAH

And ya'll thought "Chips" was some corny 70's show which had only one storyline...."Ponch takes his shirt off"

In Re Logan's Run.....Jenny Agutter was hot! Naked too.

The scene with Peter Ustinov at the end was cool...an old man with a buncha cats...that will be me.

ID chips are nuthin'

HNN is running a piee today about someone who is working on implanting a chip in the motor control section of the brain to allow disabled people to move a computer cursor with their thoughts!

It could be a godsend to those who really need some way to interact with the world around them, but It's very close to the prcursor of science fiction writers' gloomy prediction of "wirehead addicts."

For those who were too young...

Is it like a porno or what?

Medical purposes?

I'll give you medical purposes!

Suppose I'm in charge of disease control in the age of global travel, & I have to stop some incurable disease, Ebola, Small pox
Aids, drug resistant TB, a classified bio weapon.

I'm not allowed to fight the deadly disease by blanket quarentine, so I demand that I be able to track all the people the person had contact with.People authorize the move, everybody wants to live!

That's med data plus correlated GPS. Now I know who you spoke to, philandered, fought, whatever...I know everyone you directly associated with....

But it gets better...A system like this could get corporate underwriting. You go to the mall & the sales people already know what you are a sucker to buy because they scanned your chip as you entered... They know which pitch has the best % chance of success. They know which foods you can't resist if you get a whiff or a taste.... They know your credit limit before you even reach for the card.

Of course, that supervisor that you turned down for sex can put false accusations in your personnel file that follow you around for life! Or the public accusations from your divorce proceedings! Or even the accursed medical info alone may limit your career... What if your school transcripts really could follow you for life?

Or your drug tests? or your arrest record?

scanners as ubiquitous & inconspicuous as security cams....

It starts with a scannable ID#

????

what's with the "mark of the beast? stuff?
are there radical xtians in our midst?

I will admit the I am apprehensive about the implanting of chips, however, I think that this is really where we are headed.

Too late people!
LOL
The mark has been used for year's by each and everyone of ya!
Can you remember the last time that you bought somethin with a bar code on it?hehehe

See how easy it is to swipe it at the checkout?

Soon you'll all have that same type barcode in your hand.
Think of the possibility's!

The government has considered it for year's.
Ooop's,there i go preachin again...
I've said too much.
:D

Truely,Evil.

Yes, Admirable in Theory,

but the downsides. From, the series, from the thread, from the ideal, I am not a number, but a free [hu]man.

No... I'm not even Christian. *But* I do value my privacy, and a chip embedded in my arm may very well be the first step to compromising that. In all honesty, there is already enough technology out there now that can be used to violate our privacy.

I used the phrase "Mark of the Beast," not because I hold the Book of Revelations as being true, but because it really does concern me that much where this could be going.
