I can never find them. Only gross caramel apples.

Same here. That's why I was so stoked to see an actual candied apple. The last time I had one was during my grade school years. Lamentably, I fear that sudden rush of elation instilled such an unfair degree of expectation that it could only end in disappointment. It sucks most mightily.

I don't believe it. I think I would still like it. Despite my unreasonable expectations.

I think its that our palates have evolved. As a child I could eat sickeningly sweet yummies forever, now they just hurt my teeth and taste too sweet.

On the plus side of that evolution: Roquefort Cheese and Mushrooms.

mopping the floor at midnight made me think of you. the way you'd kick me out of the kitchen to get the job done right and in a quarter of the time. no copas until you're finished. it has to be clean.

you lose yourself in the motions. i see you as a little girl scrubbing away. i breathe deep. you complete me.

we laugh about moving out to a farm together. the perfect match. you fiercely dominant with a cleaning streak and me.

i miss you.

Hmm

Me too. I'll definitely have another. I'd love a ginger tom with a big fat head.

That reminds me of this yummy grocery store dip for apples. It was a mix of peanut butter and caramel. Haven't seen it in years though.

I love this post. Such Impressionism, to go with Fata's abstract expressionism and Smooth's urban fauvism. It's like visiting the Litropolitan Museum.

It also could be that my disappointment wasn't entirely with the taste of the sugary treat but, rather, its inability to let me relive, even briefly, the memories of the moment I last enjoyed a candied apple. I wanted desperately to be transported back to my youth, to the carefree joy of a crisp autumn evening at the local fair and the jittery jubilation for the holiday triple feature of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. And that's really an unfair expectation; it's just a piece of fruit with a sugar glaze, not Mr. Peabody with his WABAC machine.

Sometimes there's a lot of pressure on an apple. And they just can't perform.

When did this happen? I've never had a bad caramel apple. Ev-ar.

Oh, you should fix that. But, make sure it's good caramel, not that crappy shit they sell in the grocery store. Even better if it's caramel with a chocolate coating. Oh, and a good tart apple!

To be honest, I've only had them fresh dipped at amusement parks and street fairs and farmer's markets and the like. Talking about them immediately recalls in my brain the taste of both caramel and apple and how utterly divine they complement each other.

It's been a bit of a while since I've eaten one, but feeling how acute my memory of them is right now...I've never been disappointed in their taste, even with an apple that's not as optimum tarted! ;)
