The Great Whale Blow of 1970

Classic...

After all these years one still has to wonder who thought that was gonna be a good idea?

LOL

"the blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds"

The reporter must have been awfully pleased with that one.

There had to of been a lot of good weed involved in that decision making process.

Margate in Kent had a similar disaster.

Margate Pier (technically called Margate Jetty) was broken by storm in 1978 and had to be demolished. After thirteen failed attempts they decided to blow it up.

Rivets from the pier structure broke almost every window on Margate's seafront and the then new Police Station still has scars from the impacts.

They still talk about it. I lived just south of Newport for over 10 years...we had one wash up on the beach across from my house. They brought in a dozer and buried the fucker in the dunes above high tide. Winter storms on the coast can be a bitch. A couple years later...there he was again...only smellier
